Since she was a child, horses have played a big part in Hanna Parr’s life, today she has an eye for fashion and a shrewd business head on her shoulders.
You and your mother run a specialist horse riding clothing company from an old stable on the farm, but how did the enterprise start?
The business was established because of me really. When I was younger I was tall and thin, with long arms and could never find clothes that fit not to mention a riding jacket. One day dad decided that he wasn’t willing to spend £150 to £200 on a jacket that needed to be altered. He asked mum if she would make me a jacket seeing as she studied textiles at college, and that’s what she did! When I wore the jacket to the first show, people were asking “where did you get your jacket” and I would say that mum made it, and things started from there.
How does a customer get an item of your clothing?
Mum takes your measurements; you choose the fabric and the style. Maybe you’ve seen something you like in a magazine, only with a different collar or sleeve, if that’s the case we will alter or create a new design for you. It’s like couture for the riding world! It’s important, especially today for everyone to look good in the ring. Gucci started his career in riding, so you never know; I might be the next Gucci!
Can you guide me through the different looks?
For some competitions you would wear tweed but if you are showing show ponies, then you’d never wear tweed, you’d wear something like a navy waistcoat. We also have a side saddle outfit. In the olden days it would have been a full skirt, but by now we’ve adapted it, so that to the judges it looks like a full skirt, but at the back it’s much shorter and much easier for the horse rider to wear.
Are your clothes expensive?
A jacket would be about £250, but you need to keep in mind that every design has been specially designed for you and made by hand.
Are you still fashion conscious when you go about designing riding clothes?
Yes I have to. It’s me that’s in the ring, I’m the model for our company so I have to wear something a little different and unique so that people will notice and ask me where I got it from.
As well as your riding clothes, you also have tweed in your personal wardrobe; does that mean your wardrobe extends into the riding world?
Yes it does, and this green tweed jacket is my favourite jacket in the world. It took a while for me to convince dad that I needed it. But I wear it to go shopping, to go out to dinner, out to town – everywhere. I just love it.
At first glance this green jacket looks very traditional because of the material, but the shape is young and different isn’t it?
It is, and by adding a different material on the sleeves, it creates a nice twist on something traditional. The first time I saw it, I thought it was something nice for young people, but I’ve seen older people wearing it too, and it looks equally as good and modern on them.
How would you wear this jacket?
I usually wear skinny jeans with everything! With this jacket, because it has yellow and blue in it, I’d either wear dark blue skinny jeans or a pair of white ones - they go nicely with it, but of course if I was going to a show, I wouldn’t want to wear white. I also have a pair of Victoria Beckham jeans that I’ll wear if I’m going somewhere posh with the jacket.
This is a very unusual belt, where did you get this from?
I bought this belt at one of the big shows and it looks great with jeans. It’s not Gucci, but no one will ever know!
Do you like the idea of combining traditional things with new, fresh youthful things?
I do, I’m a young woman, I like high street clothing and the fashion you see in magazines, but because of the world I was brought up in I also like the tweeds and the traditional materials. By combining the two I create my own style, and I think it works well.
