Huw Evans is a man who's nesting amongst his clothes...

Huw Evans

Are you a big fan of clothes?

I collect a lot of things. I collect records, posters, pictures and clothes are a part of that. Instead of going out to buy clothes in any old shop, I like finding unusual and different things. I'm like a little magpie, because every time I see something I like I have to take it home with me. My bedroom is like a big nest!

Does music influence the way you dress?

Yes I think it does. I buy a lot of t-shirts when I go to gigs and music concerts. I have a collection of t-shirts by different bands. I listen to a lot of music from the 1960s and 70s and I like clothes from that era, the cowboy shirts with big collars, so yes, music probably does influence the way I dress. I don't like to wear something I know other people will be wearing. So if it was a well known band, I'd probably wouldn't wear their t-shirt. I'd be more inclined to buy a t-shirt of a band that was really, really bad, as long as the t-shirt was cool.

Do you keep your clothes nice and tidy?

My bedroom is like a magpie's nest. Because I'm the type of person that when I see something I like, it doesn't matter what it is, it could be something from a skip, if I like it, and like the way it looks then I'll take it home and find a place for in somewhere in my room.

Where do you buy your clothes?

I like to buy things in second hand shops. The best charity shop in the world is the Mind shop in Rhyl. I've found a lot of stuff there, and I like buying clothes from charity shops. It's harder now to find bargains though as charity shops have realised that when they sell something for 50p, it then gets sold on ebay for £30. So ebay's had quite an effect on bargain hunting in charity shops.

You have a lot of clothes with pictures of birds on them. Why are you such a big fan of birds?

I just like pictures of birds. I have birds on my hat and I'm also a big fan of owls! The first item of clothing I bought with pictures of birds on it was this blue cowboy shirt. The birds look like parrots, but I think they're actually canaries. I like this shirt because it doesn't look like it's been shop-made. It looks like someone's bought a blue shirt and taken it home and decorated it with birds.

Where did you get this owl t-shirt?

My girlfriend bought me this as a Christmas present as she knows that I have a thing for owls. As you can see, it has been worn a lot and I tend to wear things so much that I can't wear them anymore! I don't wear this now as it has a few stains on it that won't come off. The orange stain on the collar looks like curry but it's actually rust from my clothes horse at home.

There are a few different birds on this t-shirt. Where did this one come from?

I recently went on holiday to Thailand, and there was this woman selling t-shirts by the side of the road. I take it that she designed it herself. When I saw this I could not buy it. This is my favourite t-shirt at the moment and it has a lot of lovely birds on it. I was wearing it recently and when the musician, Gareth Bonello saw me he could name all of the birds on it.

You have a collection of ugly jumpers. What attracts you to them?

I have a problem with people calling them ugly because I don't think they're ugly at all, I think they're wonderful. A lot of people have asked me when I'm wearing this if it's a joke and that Huw's wearing a Christmassy jumper. I hate it when people call it a Christmas jumper; I just think it's a nice jumper. If I was living in Iceland and walking around wearing this jumper then I'd be quite cool.

Huw Evans

Where did you get this stripy jumper?

This jumper comes from a woollen mill museum in my girlfriend's home village of Penboer. So this is a jumper that I really like, even though it's a little tight on me.

Huw Evans

Where did you buy this Argyll jumper?

I found this at Jacob's market. It's a lovely cream golf jumper, but it's full of holes - I think something's been eating away at it!

Huw Evans

What do your friends think of your style?

A friend of mine called me recently because he was going on a night out with work. I was quite upset because he called and said, "Hi Huw, I have an ugly jumpers night coming up with work, would it be ok if I borrowed one of your jumpers?'. They aren't ugly jumpers at all!

This is quite a unique suit, where did you get this from?

My girlfriend and I went travelling around Europe and the idea was that we weren't going to spend too much because we didn't have any money to spare so we couldn't go too wild. At the end of it all, we went to Berlin and found this shop that had things here, there and everywhere. I found this rack full of suits that had never been worn and the woman in the shop said that they got them from a warehouse. The trousers are flared, like something straight from the 70s. It's an incredible suit that's never been worn and it was £100, which is just ridiculous. The first time I wore this suit I was so excited I lunged on the bed and ripped the trousers. So I've only worn it as a complete suit once, on holiday, which leaves me with a very expensive £100 jacket!
