What I like about clothes are the little details, I look at the shape and at the material, but also on the details. I look at things in detail.
Ieuan Morris is a film lecturer and director and his wardrobe is full of interesting clothes.
Nia: As a child, do you remember being aware of clothes, style and fashion?
Ieuan: Not as far as choosing my clothes but I do remember hating a particular item of clothing - a pair of bright brownish/orange trousers and mum wanted me to wear them when I was about 6 or 7 and I hated them. I used to hide them in different places but she used to find them. Having reached fifty, I think I've become more confident in my choices, as if it's some sort of final fling to make an impression on people. I don't know why.
Ieuan: I bought this one in a second hand shop. I think it's an original 70's made by Co-op - it's not a designer label and it's too small for me now but I had to buy it because of the pattern. I have a few original shirts from the 70s. They were all less than £20, they're all polyester and itch a little. But, the designs are excellent.
Ieuan: I bought this one in Mexico City about fifteen years ago. I remember the shop - some kind of Gents Outfitters which was full of everyday clothes. This style's really popular in South America. Guyabera - a shirt with four pockets, you can wear it as a jacket.
Ieuan: Mum said that I should never wear red with my hair, well, I don't have any hair left by now - I did have ginger hair. I've one red, cowboy shirt, which is nice, but I don't wear it much. I think I'll wear it for the next rugby game.
Ieuan: If I had more money, I'd spend more on shoes. I've always been interested in shoes and I've some that have lasted years. I've a pair of cowboy boots which I bought from Mexico around fifteen years ago. I don't wear them often, but they're nice shoes.
Nia: Mae'n gret, ma'r tu fewn cystal a'r tu allan! Now then, this jacket is mad!
Ieuan: Well, there was this man that lived about two or three doors down that was clearing his wardrobe and he asked if I'd like to have anything. I had to have this jacket. It's slick.
Nia: And this suit, there's a story behind this one?
Ieuan: Well, I wore this one recently for the Bafta Awards ceremony in London. The short film I made last year was nominated for an award and I didn't want to wear just a normal suit. I went to a theatric costumes place to see what they had. It's Regency in style and I wore it with a pair of trousers that I bought in a sale for £10 and a black tshirt.
Ieuan on clothes...
Sometimes you just see things and you know you have to have them. There's also things that I remember that I didn't buy but I should've.
