Johnny Tudor has been performing for over twenty years. He was born into a showbiz family which meant a childhood of theatrical travelling. His father was a pianist and singer, his mother a dancer so performing is in Johnny's blood...

Nia: Do you remember all the showbiz clothes that were around you when you were little?

Johnny: Oh, I remember the atmosphere. It was great because I was allowed backstage which meant I could be in the company of all the dancers and musicians.

Nia: What kind of a feeling is it to wear your clothes on stage?

Johnny: It's important that you feel happy in your clothes. If you look great, you'll feel great and perform great.

Helen Humphries

Nia: You have loads of white shirts!

Johnny: They're for the 'dress suits' and are 'dress shirts'. They've been handmade by a man from Hong Kong called Ascot Chang. I met him in Hong Kong when I was on a cruise. After I met him, I found out that he visited London every year and used to stay in one of the Hilton hotels. So I used to order shirts from him then and he'd send them from Hong Kong to me.

Helen Humphries

Nia: Since when have you been ordering your shirts like this then?

Johnny: Since about 5 years now and the same goes for my suits which are also handmade. Robbie Standford makes my suits. He's a very famous guy in London that makes suits for a lot of people in show business such as Tom Jones, Englebert Humperdinck, Bruce Forsyth, Des O'Connor etc. I heard about Robbie through Brucey when he said during one of his shows 'one of Robbie's' about the suit he was wearing so I've known him for a few years now.

Helen Humphries

Nia: Is this suit silk?

Johnny: They call it 'watersilk' because the effect looks like water rippling. It's very bright under the lights and looks good on stage.

Helen Humphries

Nia: What do you call these?

Johnny: These are'spats'. I still wear them every now and again when I perform an old song and dance.

Helen Humphries

Nia: Talking about performing, how about the important tap shoes? Do you buy them like this?

Johnny: No, I buy ordinary shoes to start with and then put the taps on the bottom of the shoes. They have to be quite loose so that they make a tapping sound.

Helen Humphries

Johnny: In my second wardrobe, I keep my pantomime outfits such as this 'Robinson Crusoe' outfit which Mum made for me out of a pair of curtains. I performed this panto in lots of places such as the New Theatre in Cardiff, the Grand in Swansea, Royal Court in Liverpool, Manchester and many more!

Helen Humphries

Johnny: This was the shirt I wore with the suit. And this is the'jobot'.

Johnny on ddillad...
I'm not sure if it's in my blood, but I want to be smart all the time. I hate people looking scruffy, my son looks like a terrorist...but he's happy! But, for stage work, you have to look good. If you've got the right suit on, the only thing you have to do is sing in tune!
