Joyce Jones had her first sewing machine when she was only 10 years old. She's onto her third machine now and is still making all of her clothes herself...

Joyce: I can't remember a time when I haven't doted on clothes and materials. To get the clothes I want, I have to make them myself. I'm a funny shape and I like clothes that fit well so if I buy something I have to alter it, so it's just easier to make it from scratch.

Nia: This is your creative room is it? How do you make an item of clothing then?

Joyce: Yes, this is the messy room! You can't be tidy and create! I put pictures of clothes that appeal to me on a wall on one side of the room, hang materials at the other side and place sketches in front of me. After making a sketch, I'll make a pattern. If you cut correctly, you won't go wrong. You can never un-do the cut, so it's worth spending a lot of time on that. That's what you pay for, the cut that is, when you buy from expensive shops. I know my size and shape to the exact inch by know so I know how to hide every bump as well!

Joyce: I'll usually add something onto an item such as embroidery or some kind of buckle or some leather, but embroidery is the favourite.

Nia: What type of clothes do you like?

Joyce: Classic clothes. I like Armani's style. I don't like frills, I'm not a 'girly' type at all. This is the closest I'll ever get to owning something that's Armani as I used Armani material.

Nia: Where did you get this material then?

Joyce: It's imperfect material so it was a little cheaper. And I have a trouser suit in this material too. I've put top stitching on top of it too.

Nia: Have you seen this material in Armani's clothes and copied a particular style?

Joyce: Yes. Although, there's quite a lot more of detail in my version. I went to an Armani exhibition in London and there were trousers that were very similar. The material is silk tweed with linen. It's beautiful and lovely to wear.

Nia: Do you find yourself going for the expensive or inexpensive materials?

Joyce: Expensive. I don't see the point of spending time on something that's not going to look good. Therefore, I don't mind spending a little on good quality material.

Nia: How long does it take you to make a suit?

Joyce: This suit doesn't have lining so it's quite simple. It wouldn't take too long, maybe a day or two.

Joyce: I look at magazines for inspiration. I'll buy 'Vogue' because it's a year or so ahead of what will appear in the shops. Often, I'll make clothes that are of a style that haven't yet appeared in shops which can look a little strange. But, within a year, most people are wearing similar styles. I made this one three years ago using soft wool so it was ahead of it's time.

Nia: Do people come up to you and ask you 'I like your clothes, where did you get them from?

Joyce: Yes, and I blush.

Nia: Why?

Joyce: Because one doesn't like to say 'I made this' as such. I'm quietly pleased obviously but there's some kind of shyness there at the same time perhaps.
