The 60s is a decade that appeals to Leah Jones and it's influence on her clothes cupboard is evident.
Nia: It's quite apparent that we're in the home of somebody that loves the 60s. What's the appeal to you about the 60s Leah?
Leah: Well, I think it all started with the clothes to begin with, then I studied art at school where I became familiar with the furniture and artwork from the era. I just like the whole style and feel of the era.
Nia: You found a chest of your mother's clothes from the 60s. That was a nice feeling surely?
Leah: Yes, it was just lovely. She has some lovely things and there's a story behind each and every one of them. They were part of Mum's life but are now part of my collection.
Leah: These are all from the chest, and are ones that Mum made herself during the 60s because she didn't have a lot of money at the time, so the only way of having new clothes was to make them herself.
Nia: The miniskirt is the item that we all think of when we think of the 60s fashion. The waist on these are so little!
Leah: I'm not sure where she wore this one but it was a suit that she wore with this bag. The other clothes were everyday clothes but this one was particularly special and smart.
Nia: Do you wear your mother's old clothes then?
Leah: No, they're a little too small for me I must say
Leah: This one's quite girly.
Leah: These are the clothes that Mum actually bought during the 60s.
Leah: She wore this suit to a wedding years ago. I have a picture of her wearing the suit holding my sister's hand and the camera is over her shoulder in the picture.
Leah: Poncho's have been fashionable recently. Mum bought this one from Anna Davies in Betws y Coed. I have a picture of her wearing it with me as a baby in her arms so it's quite sentimental. I wear it when it gets cold.
Leah: This is from M&S from years ago. She had tartan shoes and a bag to fit but it's a shame it doesn't fit me.
Nia: Did you dress differently to your friends at school? Did your friends pass comments on the way you dressed?
Leah: Everybody was aware that I always had to dress a little different or they might pass a comment on my hair maybe. That's always been the case for years. I've spent a lot of time in charity shops trying to choose clothes that are a little different. A big part of me just enjoys clothes, and it's as simple as that really.
Leah: These were the bags Mum used to have.
Leah: This was Mum's make-up bag which is quite unique. You don't get things like this these days.
Leah: These are the bags I picked up from charity shops.
Nia: Are there a lot of clothes that you'd actually wear today in your wardrobe?
Leah: Yes. They're influenced by the 60s. I bought this in a little shop in Denbigh. The target pattern is quite characteristic of the era. You'll see it in Andy Warhol's art from the decade, for example.
Nia: Art is important to you isn't it? I've noticed that you've a lot of 60s art around the house?
Leah: Yes, everywhere!
Leah: I bought this jumper from a second hand shop. I just liked the colour.
Leah: This is something that goes with the jumper. Whilst I was at college, we did this 'ugly crawl' and this girl was wearing this and I said I had to have it and that I didn't think it was ugly at all, so she obviously gave it to me. I've the whole set now!
Nia: Do you see yourself ever adding to the collection?
Leah: I think so. I'd like to carry on shopping at charity shops and if something catches my, I'm sure to buy it.
Nia: Do you see yourself wearing your clothes when you're 60/70? Bright pvc items maybe?!
Leah: Maybe I'll have toned it down a little but I'd like to think that I'll carry on dressing clothes that are a little different, so hopefully yes.
