What do clothes mean to you?
If I find something I truly like it's like being in love for the first time. But I also have a great friendship with my clothes. There are some clothes that I've had for years that maybe don't look their best now, but I know if I have some kind of personal crisis and don't know what to wear, that I have a few old faithful outfits that I can throw on and feel great.
What's the story behind this dress?
I bought this dress in Paris. I was walking down the street and saw this and thought that I had to have it, and I've worn so much that by now it looks a little tatty. But if I have no idea what to wear I can rely on this and I know that I look ok. It's a little bit like a 'can-can' dress, it's one of my favorites and I've had it for about six years!
Where did you get all of these skirts?
I love the net on them. They're by a French designer and I think they're fantastic. The shape's wonderful and they move with me so well. I have a lot of these, I have one in gold, in white, and in black...I have a few!
Do you have a favorite designer?
I like these clothes, they're made by a brother and sister from the Basque country and the collection's called Ian Mosh. They use a lot of wool and different textures to make their clothes, there's something special and colourful about their clothes.
What about your maternity clothes?
When I discovered I was pregnant I found these, they're so easy to wear. The maternity selection in clothes shops are horrible, they have no shape at all! At such an exciting time you want to show off your shape rather than hide it. I think these kind of things are great because you can layer them.
When did your interest in clothes begin?
I used to play dress-up a lot as a child and I think that played a key role in my interest in clothes. Today I'll use a pair of shoes or something to get into a character, so it still influences me today.
Are clothes something creative for you?
Yes absolutely. I don't have any interest in shopping on the high street because everything looks the same. I have no interest in fashion fads either, I prefer styles that last.
You have clothes form all over the world.
I find that when I visit a country I return with a whole load of new things. I go with a small bag and come back with a large one. It's the same as taking a photograph; it captures an experience or memory. A bag is an easy thing to carry because it doesn't take much space, so I tend to collect them. I have bags from Africa, Lesotho, South America, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and Thailand.
What's the story behind this hat?
This hat is one of my most prized possessions. When I was working in Lesotho, they had these traditional hats, and I remember seeing this old lady who was a real 'mama' and she was wearing this hat. I loved the hat so much that I struck a bargain with her. I gave her my new hat and she gave me her old one, and she was over the moon. It's been repaired many times, but that's what I like about it. This hat has a story to tell and it reminds me of the old lady.
Have you ever thought about designing your own clothes?
I design a lot in my head. I designed this jacket when I was in Vietnam. We got stuck in this little village because of the floods. We couldn't go any further on land and had to wait there for four or five days for an airplane to carry us out. I came across this little girl sewing on a street corner. I drew a picture of this jacket on a piece of paper and within a few hours she bought this to me. I designed it and within hours the little girl had made it for me. I don't think I even paid a pound for it!
Do you think that your style will change when you become a mother?
I don't know. I may have to be a little more practical, I won't be able to wear 'dry clean only' clothes! I'm quite an easy going person anyway; I don't keep my best clothes for special occasions. I'll wear my net skirt to go to the shops quite often. Maybe I'll become more practical but I don't think I'll change too much.
