Do you like fashion and clothes?
I have a problem when it comes to clothes, I’m addicted, completely addicted, but I don’t care. If I see anything in a magazine or somewhere like that I’ll dream and dream about it until I buy it.
How would you describe your style?
About three or four years ago when I got engaged, I decided that I needed to dress a little more feminine. I used to feel frustrated because my style was stuck in a rut, I would wear baggy jeans and a baggy jumper and I felt unhappy with my style. Over the years I kept my body hidden underneath baggy clothes because I was unhappy with my shape. But then I decided I had to have a little more confident in myself. I started to try on dresses and found out that they suited my shape and gave me a confidence boost. My husband, mother and friends started to comment on how good I looked and made me realise that you have to make the most of your body, there’s no point in fighting it you should just celebrate it.
Do you like one kind of style in particular?
I think that the 1940s style dresses suit my shape. I think it slims the hips and hides my bum, but emphasise the waist. Dresses from the 1950s do the same; they are tight around the waist and flare from the waist which hides all of my flaws and shows off my assets.
You spend a lot of time romanticising about your life in Bethesda don’t you?
I’ve never thought about it like that but I do love being at home. There’s something about where I live, about my gran’s old house, and her old wardrobe the same place as it has ever been. Grandma used to love clothes as well and her wardrobe was bursting at the seams, and today my wardrobe is exactly the same. There isn’t a free corner in the house and I like keeping that tradition alive.
Where did you get these dresses?
The wedding nearly didn’t happen because of these dresses. These are just two of about six dresses I bought when I went to New York to perform. Martin, my husband, or fiancé at the time couldn’t come with me as it was just before the wedding and we couldn’t afford it. But when I was there I sat down and had a little bottle of rose wine in a street café and then went shopping. I bought a few dresses, they weren’t expensive, they were only about £90 each, but I bought about seven or them!!
You wear a lot of vintage clothes don’t you?
Vintage clothes are very fashionable but are getting harder and harder to find. They’re also getting more and more expensive because more and more people are buying them. But I feel sometimes that other people shouldn’t be wearing them because I wore them first!
Is it true that you have two wedding dresses?
Yes it is true, but only because I’ve been a little foolish. I had this image in my head that I was going to get married in a vintage gown, and I came across a dress which was pre vintage, from the eighteenth century and had holes everywhere. I bought it home and my mum and best friend told me that I looked horrible in it. But it’s an amazing dress, just think of all the history that it has. It’s even been used in a play at the National in London! But I understood that they had a point, so I bought this dress, and this is the one I wore on my wedding day. They’re like a part of the family, each one has its own story.
What kind of shoes did you wear for the wedding?
Christian Leboutin shoes. They’re very high! When I wore them at the beginning of the day I thought that they were very comfortable, and I was proud of myself for buying comfort. But eighteen hours later I took them off my feet, and my feet were red raw!
Tell me about this outfit.
This is an outfit that I wear a lot. I wear this blouse and pencil skirt when I perform on stage, and I feel like a lady when I wear them. It makes me stand straight and walk tall; it also makes me more aware of my posture when I sit down.
Do you own a lucky pair of shoes?
Yes, my blue pair. I always perform well when I wear them. So now I find it hard not to wear them in case my performance isn’t up to scratch. I get very superstitious about things like that and insist on wearing my blue shoes. I’ve had people from the audience shout “nice shoes” at me, nothing about my singing, but a lot about my shoes!!
