The TV presenter and dramatist and her interesting clothes.

This girl’s choice of clothing depends on how she feels on that day, so it’s her fancy more than any one design that leads the way...

Luned: I don’t really know all that much about what’s in fashion, to tell you the truth, so I interpret fashion in my own little way. When I was younger I experimented a lot, and failed quite often! I used to go to London on trips and buy things which were a bit eccentric, a little bit too colourful, but now I think I’ve found my own style. For the moment at least – it may well change again in the future.

I remember looking at my parents’ photo albums. I liked going through the family albums. I especially liked the really early ones where my parents themselves were young in the 60s, and seeing these huge flares on my mum and dad and thinking ‘wow, these clothes are pretty cool’. I think there’s a creative aspect to buying clothes. The way you look at the cut and the colour. They are often very attractive things, so it’s something very personal I think – the way you dress.

Walking into your room is like walking into an art gallery with all these clothes hanging! There are so many dresses here, and different prints and colours, it’s a real feast for the eyes, isn’t it?

What about that dress there? That was obviously for a special occasion...

I was invited to a black tie night and I’d never been to one before, so I didn’t know what to wear. I was in a bit of a dilemma, so I went shopping with my mother to Cardiff and found this dress straight away, within an hour, in the first shop we went to. I thought ‘this one will do!’ and I was quite happy, because I don’t like to spend hours at a time shopping.

Some of these other dresses are more informal, day-to-day dresses aren’t they? Have you got a favourite?

I have lots of clothes that I like, it varies depending on my mood. One day I’ll like a particular pattern and decide to wear that. When I’m choosing clothes, I go on my instinct in a way, what shape and colour goes with what rather than what’s fashionable.

How would you have to feel in the morning to wear this dress?

Quite playful. Maybe I’d want to feel positive or happy. It makes me laugh, it’s a bit over-the-top, isn’t it?

What about the clothes you wear when you’re presenting Y Sioe Gelf?

Well because I’m presenting, the image is an inevitable part of the job. But I’ve learnt over the years not to wear things which are too different or draw too much attention to me because it’s the artwork and the contributors that are important at the end of the day, not me.

If I’m being honest, I’m much more untidy when I’m sitting at home in the study. I’ll wear scruffy clothes because no-one’s looking and I can relax. But I’ll always wear shoes and not slippers and pyjamas!

I remember my grandfather, who was a writer himself, saying he’d never wear slippers in the study. I think it affects the way you think when you wear shoes that are too comfortable to work in, so proper shoes at the desk!

I got that one in San Francisco last summer. I went here on holiday with a friend of mine. Then we went from there to LA to see my cousin, who’s a film music composer. He invited us to the premiere of a film he’s written the score for, and this is the dress I wore that night. It was a great night!

Do you shop locally at all?

In the second-hand shops, yes, there are some great shops here. One shop just around the corner here is like an Aladdin’s Cave, very messy. I go up to the attic there and find some really unusual things. In terms of second-hand shops, I feel as if some of them have got a bit too formal now. They have different colours in different sections, and things are so clear it’s like being in a normal shop.

Where are your second-hand clothes?

That t-shirt with the sequins is obviously from the 80s with those shoulder pads. I wouldn’t wear that very often, but clothes can be quite ironic and fun, can’t they?

What’s the story behind this woollen thing?

When I was little, I used to knit a bit, scarves and so on. My grandmother, my mother’s mother, taught me. Then last year, she had to teach me again because I’d sort-of forgotten. So I started to knit this last year, but it ended up as a sort of project because I knitted it with friends. I’d take it to a cafe or out somewhere because it was something I enjoyed doing. Then I started to teach my friends. So that’s why it’s such a mess, because so many different people tried it!

This material has got to be unique. Who have we got here...Che Guevara, Bob Marley, Salvador Dali….what’s the story here?

I saw this material when I was 17 and living in Bangor, and decided I liked it a lot. So I asked my grandmother to make a top for me using it. It’s not really a clothing material is it?! So she made me this top fair play to her, and I wore it a lot. I thought I was pretty cool in this top. I wouldn’t wear it any more though. I’ve just kept it because my gran made it for me, because it means something to me.

When I was younger I hardly ever wore dresses, only to weddings or parties or special occasions. But all of a sudden I’ve started to wear them quite a lot, especially in the summer when there’s some sun. I like the cut of a dress, the way they fall, but maybe a big part of it is that I’m getting older and adapting because of that.

I like a halterneck and dresses that go out at the waist – that they’re tight at the waist and then go out. I particularly like vintage dresses. I think they’re unique; they’re quite often made of wonderful fabrics, and sewn by hand so that it’s possible you’re the only one with that dress. Also the history behind the clothes, the fact that someone has worn them during a time when I didn’t even exist, that’s quite interesting.

So you give them a second life in a way...

Yes, I resurrect them. I remember buying a second-hand coat from a shop in Aber and finding some kind of game in the pocket, made of matches. It was quite a mystery, I didn’t understand that it was a game to begin with...

Generally, how important are clothes and the whole image thing in your life?

I enjoy clothes and they’re something to have fun with and enjoy. But I think we live in a very superficial age, and put too much pressure on clothes. I don’t think clothes should be that important.
