Margaret Williams is a singer with a treasure trove of clothes.

Margaret Williams

Margaret, do you enjoy putting on make-up and wearing special clothes when you perform?

People expect to see you dressed appropriately when you perform. When you're getting yourself ready, doing your hair and make-up, it's like you're creating a different person and it's that person that then goes on stage.

Margaret Williams

When you hear the name Margaret Williams you think of someone glamorous, and you haven't disappointed me Margaret!

It was you that asked me to wear something I've worn to perform in Nia, otherwise I'd never have chosen this outfit to wear! I like to dress quite casually when I'm not performing. A pair of trousers and a black jacket, that'll do me fine. I bought this white suit to perform on stage for Noson Lawen and I then wore it for Dechrau Canu Dechrau Canmol about a year and a half ago. I like clothes that I can wear more than once.

This green beaded top is amazing. When did you get this?

I bought this in the mid 60s after my first Summer Season. I was in Bournemouth with Cyril Fletcher who was very well known at the time, he then went on to appear with Esther Ranson on That's Life. There was a showbiz ball at the end of the summer and everyone that was performing in and around Bournemouth was going to this ball. Frankie Vaughan, Jimmy Tarbuck and the Beverly Sisters - everyone was going, so I bought this top to wear. I was going to wear it with a green skirt, but as the night of the ball came nearer I decided that this top was too old-fashioned and something my mother would wear. So I bought a mini black shift dress and wore it with a plain polo neck and it looked lovely. The dress is long gone by now, but I've kept this top because of the occasion. This top was much more expensive than the dress, but I've never worn it.

You own two red suits. When did you buy this fitted one?

I bought this suit in the 70s. There was a shop in the arcade in Cardiff called Hobbs that sold quite expensive clothes. I'd only go there now and again but I bought this suit to wear on the cover of an album I did in the 70s. I wore it with a silver Lurex polo neck. This suit's very fitted and I haven't dared to try it on in years!

Margaret Williams

What about your other red suit, this one's much lighter than the other, where did you get this from?

This is an Ossie Clark suit. I was touring with the musical Rose Marie and I was playing the part of Rose. We travelled across Britain and I bought this suit just before going to the Grand Theatre in Leeds.

This sequinned suit is made for the stage isn't it?

One year in the 80s I was the onstage presenter at the Llangollen Eisteddfod. After three days there, I was going straight to London to fly to Norway to sing on a cruise ship. As I entered the lobby of the hotel in Llangollen, Hywel D Roberts and his wife were by the desk and I think I gave him a bit of a shock walking in wearing this outfit. He said to me, "You're not wearing that to present in Llangollen are you?" As well as presenting during the day, I was also presenting nightly concerts, but didn't dare wear this dress on stage. If I was singing then maybe I'd have wore it, but not to present because, as he said, "they'll see you coming a mile away"!

Have you got any clothes from the 1990s?

I remember singing the song 'My Hero' from the musical Chocolate Soldier in a studio with the Morriston Orpheus Choir and I wore this black and red dress. I wore the green one in Llandudno when I recorded an Andrew Lloyd Webber song there with the Rhos on Sea Male Voice Choir. Strangely, when I recall performances, the actual songs I sang come back to me as well as who I sang them with, which is very nice.

This black dress with flowers down the front looks very special, for what occasion did you buy this?

I did a concert for S4C at the North Wales Theatre, now known as Venue Cymru, about five years ago to celebrate 40 years in the business, and I bought this dress for the concert. It's a Bellville Sassoon dress and I have quite a few outfits from the same designer. There are a few designers that I can't wear, even if it's the correct size, they don't fit because the cut is either too big or too small, but Bellville Sassoon fits me perfectly.

This black skirt looks like an useful item. When did you buy this?

This is a skirt that I wore on one of my television series and it was very handy as it goes with a lot of different jackets. There's something very flirty about this skirt. I took it with me on one of the cruise ships once and wore it on a night when I wasn't performing. Because I had the night off, I went down to the theatre to see the rest of the crew performing. I walked right through the theatre to the front and a child came up to me to ask for an autograph. So I signed a piece of paper and as I did a woman came up to me and tapped me on the shoulder and said; "Excuse me Margaret, but your skirt's inside your knickers". I'd walked all the way through the theatre with my skirt tucked into my tights. Oh! I nearly died of embarrassment!

Margaret Williams

Which is your favourite outfit?

I won't wear anything unless I'm completely comfortable in it. Maybe they aren't fashionable and maybe other people don't like them, but I have to feel comfortable wearing them because going out on stage is a daunting task in itself without worrying about my outfit. But to tell you the truth, even with so many clothes, I can't say that I love any of them. For me, clothes fall into two categories, the ones that make me feel fat, and ones that make me feel thin, and my wardrobe is full of clothes that do one or the other. I do own one suit that I'm fond of, which is a black and silver Escada suit. I bought it a few years back when I was presenting a BAFTA and I then wore it when I appeared on the Leslie Wynne television show, I have to say that I'm fond of that suit.

Margaret Williams

Will you still be buying sequins in the future?

Sequins seem to be coming back in fashion at the moment. And they're also saying that big shoulders are back, which I'm quite happy about. I love performing, so I guess that while I'm still performing, I'll still need performing clothes.
