From the seventies through to the noughties, Margaret Noakes’s wardrobe is full of clothes which reflect the decades and remind her of interesting events throughout her life.

I wore this dress to go to Highgrove with Tudor. Tudor was working with the Prince’s Trust at the time, and I remember going round the back, and there were Camellia’s on the wall. Of course I had been talking about Camilla hadn’t I? And I went on to say, “Are all those Camilla’s up there nice?’ An awful thing to say! This is nice, it’s by Jonah and you can wash them and just put them on the line to dry and they dry without the need to iron them or anything.

I wore this one to go to a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. Prince Charles came up to me and said, “Well you’ve got the right clothes on today”. I thought he was referring to how smart I was looking but it was in fact because the Queen was wearing yellow as well!

I like this one a lot because it’s comfortable and I liked the colours and I wanted to look nice for my daughter Helen’s wedding. It was quite an emotional day for me really. I’m going to start crying now just thinking about it. I’m going to keep that one with me until the end.

There is something very sentimental in the clothes Margaret has kept. The red dress she wore on her sixtieth birthday and the yellow coat she wore to her son Peter’s wedding. And then clothes for important church events.

Tudor and George’s mum lived to her nineties and when he was made Archbishop off Wales she had to go down to St Davids, so this coat is very special.

I have realised that my choice of clothes is probably down to the influence of my mother. She was very fond of clothes and as a child I remember her designing fashions and patterns different to those you could get in the shop. I particularly remember a small tartan suit she made for me with a Tam O’Shanter hat to go with it. I felt special in that suit, and proud to be unique.

I thought my mother was a smart lady. She died very young and as a result the only memory I really have of her is from photographs. She wore unusual clothes to be honest with you. I remember as a child that other children would pull my leg as my mother would insist on wearing hats with long feathers, but I liked the fact she was so different.

My love of loose fitting coats with fur on them or adding fur to an outfit, dresses with unusual patterns, cloche hats, they’re all obvious in these photographs of her.

If you take a look at my mother’s shoes, these are the same as she would wear.

You also like a bit of sparkle don’t you? There are also a number of items with a similar style?

I’ve had a lot of surgery on my feet, and sometimes I would wear closed toe shoes, they are uncomfortable unless you are wearing them to somewhere special...

These are Jimmy Choo....but I notice that the soles look as if they haven’t been worn. Haven’t you worn them yet?

I’ve only worn them in the house. They were seven pounds, these were extremely expensive, and they are of course more comfortable to wear outside than to wear those outside. But it’s nice to have the shoes.

A Zandra Rhodes dress. Were you a big fan of her work?

I liked all her designs and I’ve got a lot of dresses by her but this is a favourite. I used to wear it round my neck. Or I would put it over my head and look like Zandra Rhodes! But yes, I do like this one and it’s lovely and soft. I wore this to the evening do at my daughter’s wedding. I felt very special!

This is a Kanga. She came from Australia. She did very well really, she made small suits, she also knew about clothes and I wear this one to this day and while it may be old I still like it.

Margaret Noakes

You obviously take great care of your clothes?

Yes, too well. Because I will ask Tudor sometimes, ‘What am I going to wear tonight?’ and he’ll say 'What!?’ Of course, it’s making the choice that’s difficult.

Would you say you’re style has changed, are the clothes you buy different today?

My style has changed considerably. I wear things which better match the society I mix in. And because I’m getting larger I need clothes which hide my shape. I like clothes which are comfortable. When I was young, I could wear tighter clothes but now I prefer clothes which are comfortable for me to wear.
