Is there one costume in particular from the stage that you remember?
The dress I wore in 'Y Tŵr' (The Tower). It was a red dress and when I went on the stage wearing it the crowd gasped. Of course in any performance you can't ignore that kind of reaction, it carried me through my performance. And that stayed in my mind.
Why do you wear so much black?
It's so easy to wear. My hair has no colour now but my skin always looks tanned all year round, I'm comfortable in black.
Do you admire someone's style in particular?
Judi Dench, because her style has evolved. I've followed her work for many years, and by now I think she looks amazingly beautiful. She'll be seventy this year and looks great. I think she looks better now than when she was fifty! She's truly fantastic.
Where did you get this pashmina?
Because I'm so short and I'm not the slimmest person in the world I feel that I can't wear a coat. This hasn't cost as much as a coat, but a little more than a scarf.
What's the story behind this black dress?
I got this dress as a gift from the actress Beryl Williams. Now, Beryl's very tall and very thin, but there is a picture of me in a 'Pais' magazine in 1980 wearing this dress, and it doesn't look too bad at all! To think that Beryl and I have worn the same dress, we're not the same height or size! I couldn't fit into it now though.
Do you wear any colour at all?
No, not these days. I hope that I can wear this dress someday. I bought it when I was on holiday, black probably wasn't as prominent in my wardrobe then. It's about eight, nine years old by now, but it's made from sumptuous material, so I'll keep it.
What's the story behind this stripy jumper?
This one is really old. I bought it sometime in the 1970s, and it was a long jumper that went past my knees. I took it to one of the girls who cut it down for me and now I wear it as a jumper. I feel comfortable in it, and so I'll be wearing this jumper until I die!
