Mefys Jones is a teacher in Anglesey. She loves clothes and keeps everything and there is one decade, which is very close to her heart.

Mefys: The 80s is important to me because during someone's secondary education, someone usually finds his or her own identity. Someone puts their own stamp on their look and gets their own fashion sense. During this time, I started choosing my own clothes rather than having my mum choose clothes for me.

Nia: Where would you say that this interest in clothes started?

Mefys: I'd say during my childhood. I was an only child. I used to be carted around with Mum from shop to shop because Mum liked clothes very much. Also, I remember having a Sindy doll as a Christmas present and outfits for the doll to change into. Another influence of course was friends - as a group of young girls, someone would bounce ideas off each other as far as keeping up with the fashion. We used to try to imitate who was on TV as well as pop stars. Duran Duran was my favourite band and Madonna as a female artist. Madonna used to, and still does, update her fashion.

Nia: You mention the 80's - how did the clothes connect with your experiences during this decade?

Mefys: Y siwtiau diwedd yr 80au mae'n debyg pan o'n i'n y chweched dosbarth ac yn y coleg. Roeddwn i'n gwisgo'r siwtiau yma bob penwythnos ac mae'n siwr bod pobl yn meddwl pam bod hon yn gwisgo siwt i fynd allan er enghraifft. Odd y dillad yma yn ddrud, faswn i'm yn gwario gymaint ar ddillad i fynd allan heddiw er mod i'n dal yn hoff o ddillad. Ond, o'n i'n teimlo 'mod i'n gweithio ac felly'n annibynnol ac felly'n haeddu y math yna o 'perk' ar y pryd pan falle oedd pobl eraill yn gwario ar bethau eraill, ond yn ystod y cyfnod yna, dillad oedd y flaenoriaeth. I feddwl 'mod i wedi byw drwy'r 70au, 80au a'r 90au a'r presennol y ddegawd fyddwn i'n ddewis fyddai'r 80au.

Mefys: I remember going to the Anglesey show when I was 14 years old with Nain and Taid and seeing a leather jacket. I went home and started thinking how could I get the jacket. It was fairly expensive at the time, but I had a good excuse as my Aunt was due to marry within the following month and that's the way I sold the idea to my parents and they were very kind and bought the jacket for me.

Mefys: Baggy shorts to the knee were quite characteristic of the period but these shorts alone weren't enough so I had to buy the matching shirt and trousers too. This is the outfit I wore for my eighteenth birthday party at the end of the 80's.

Mefys: I loved the colours. The trousers are extremely baggy and the jacket is quite fitted.

Mefys: These are quite extreme culottes. Someone could think that they're actually a skirt until you take a few steps in them. What we notice here is that the waist comes up really high. What's actually ironic is that I've just bought some culottes about a month ago and it shows how fashion comes and goes and then comes back again.

Nia: It surprises me that you've kept all of these clothes. Why?

Mefys: It surprises me too! I don't really know. The 80's was just a decade that I had so many experiences and therefore have so many memories. It's just a decade that's important to me when I grew up. Someone always looks back at the time when they were in secondary school and college, which was the 80's for me. The clothes have followed me in a box from my parent's house to here and to be honest I'd be heartbroken if the box disappeared.
