"I live for sewing and sewing keeps me alive. I enjoy it."

Megan: My mother was interested in sewing. She didn't receive any formal education because she was at home on the farm but was always doing something with her hands be it knitting or sewing or maybe altering an item of clothing or creating something new with a piece of material. So inevitably, I was also interested then. When I turned sixteen, and about to leave school, I decided I'd carry on with sewing and went to learn how to sew and make clothes properly.

Nia: Do you remember what the first item of clothing you made?

Megan: I remember it was a skirt. It was fairly simple but I thought the world of it. It was like gold because I'd made it myself. Then, I made a blouse allowing me to learn how to make a sleeve and collar and then a dress.

Nia: Megan is a bit of a dab hand at sewing. She's won numerous competitions for her work and is regarded as one of the best seamstress in Britain.

Megan: These are some of the clothes I keep in the wardrobe. I've never worn them but I think the world of them because these are the items that I've been competing with.

Megan: When you do items for competitions, the quality has to be spot-on. And you'll make more of an effort to get the finish just right and ensure that every stitch is in place, so I think the world of the items of clothing I've used to compete with.

Nia: Megan's high quality work means that she gets lots of work making wedding dresses. There are two special wedding dresses in her wardrobe.

Megan: These are my daughter's wedding dresses. This one's Manon's, the eldest daughter and it goes back 15 years now. The shoulders are fairly padded as they used to be fashionable then, there are no sleeves on most wedding dresses today. I made a head-dress too, it's tiaras today. Loops and buttons are a sort of trademark of my work I think, I love doing them and like them on wedding dresses especially

Megan: This is my other daughter's dress, Sioned, which is completely different and dates back 10 years. The style is different, as if it's been tailored. It has an interesting back to the jacket which matches the skirt that falls into pleats.

Nia: Do you make a lot of your own clothes?

Megan: I wouldn't dream about going out to buy an item of clothing. I'll make everything myself. I'm also short so I've got to be extremely careful. There are some colours that just slice me in half, and I have to have clothes that fit me perfectly, especially trousers. I don't know where I'd find trousers to fit me perfectly, so it's much easier and cheaper for me to buy a metre of fabric to make a pair of trousers.

Nia: Will you keep hold of a piece of material for a while before making anything with it then?

Megan: Oh, yes. I've a chest full of materials. Sometimes, when I need something quickly, I'll just dip into the chest, choose a piece of material and make something with it.

Nia: I love this brown leather jacket

Megan: I made this at the start of the eighties, one of the first coats I made. I enjoyed making and wearing it. It's still soft but it's been in the wardrobe for years.

Nia: If you ever want to get rid of the coat, you know where to come to.

Megan: These are clothes I actually wear. As you can see, I'm a suits person. I love this one, it's cashmere – it's soft and lovely to wear. The trousers are plain and grey and then I used patterned material for the jacket. I used some of the pattern that's on the jacket on the side of the bootleg trousers.

Megan: My black suede coat is one of my favourites and is very handy. I can wear it with black or brown, it's warm and can wear it for any occasion.

Megan: I enjoy working with the material that is used to make raincoats. I find it easy to work with. I can just send off for it in any colour, it's just wonderful.

Megan: I made this for a visit to Patagonia. It's light, has been lined with fleece and the sleeves have been lined with satin so it was very useful.

Nia: Haven't you ever thought of extending your business to just making raincoats and fleeces?

Megan: Not at all, I just enjoy making one or two rather than making too much of the same things.

Megan: I like seeing clothes. I like seeing people wear them, especially if they look good on them. They'll catch my eye and I might remember the style then and I'll think of the style when I start creating a new item.

Nia: So you tend to take inspiration from different people?

Megan: Oh! I'm extremely dangerous at stealing ideas! So if someone has nice clothes, watch out!
