Myra James is a busy mum working for the family company, which specialise in agricultural machine hiring. By day, she works in a ‘man’s world’ and even though she had a keen interest in fashion when she was young, her family and the business have now taken over, leaving her with little time for style.
Do you think your interest in fashion has disappeared over the years? Does that make you sad?
As you get older it’s nice to look back on the clothes that you wore when you were young as they bring back a lot of happy memories. But my interest in clothes has disappeared, simply because I haven’t got the time anymore. It’s a shame that I don’t have the time, but other things and other people come first.
What kinds of problems do you face when choosing your clothes?
I don’t know what suits me. And when I buy something and bring it home the children will ask me, “Where did you get that from mum?” So obviously when I do buy something, it’s not right for my shape.
How often would you say that you feel beautiful, sexy or even nice in your clothes?
Never really. I work with men every day and I’m the only female so I would like to see a new look Myra!
Eleanor Gardner is a stylist who’s going to give Myra some tips on her wardrobe and give her a makeover.
Eleanor: Myra has a lot of vintage clothes that she wore in the 1970s – it’s very important to keep these clothes, but they need to be kept in another wardrobe or in bags so that they are stored correctly.
E: Myra’s clothes all look like they’re from the 1990s and they’re not the best colours for her either, because most of them have yellow undertones that doesn’t complement her skin tone.
Did you enjoy the experience of Eleanor going through your wardrobe?
I was very nervous to start off with, but I was very grateful for her honesty – telling me what suited me and what didn’t. When she told me to throw clothes away I was worried that I wouldn’t have any left at all! But I do feel better for throwing things away, and I know that I’ll look better now. Those clothes didn’t suit my body shape and I’m grateful she told me that, that someone was honest with me. I’m just looking forward to wearing clothes that suit me.
E: Myra has a lot of three quarter length trousers, but they don’t suit her as she’s short. They cut off her legs and make them look even shorter. I’ve gotten rid of a lot of clothes so that she can now see everything when she’s deciding what to wear in the morning. I’ve also bought wooden hangers to protect her clothes.
E: I’ve chosen practical clothes with a splash of colour and also added layers to introduce an interesting silhouette.
Do you feel beautiful?
Yes. I feel great and that’s how I feel inside as well. It’s been a fun, happy experience and I’ve enjoyed every second of it. New look Myra! I feel like a princess! I feel a lot slimmer as well. And now that I’ve had new glasses I think the old ones will have to go to the bin.
Do you think that you’ve got practical clothes for work?
Yes. I’ve got jeans and I’ll still be able to go out and help the lads but I don’t have to dress like one of them and I think that’s the point I’ve been missing over the years!
