Nicola Pilkington is only nineteen years of age but during those years, she has developed her own unique style.

Nia: Of all the wardrobes I've seen whilst making this series, I think you're wardrobe is the most unusual of all. How did you get the idea to store your clothes like this?

Nicola: When I used to own a 'normal' wardrobe, everything used to be stuffed into the wardrobe and I couldn't find a thing. It's easier like this.

Nia: Everything looks the same from here with all the colours stored together?!

Nicola: I'm used to it. I know exactly what I have and am used to all of the different textures so I know exactly what's what...except for black...black's difficult to find!

Nicola: When I was little, I was a bit of a tomboy really and I wasn't really into fashion. Whilst my friends were busy making sure that everything used to match, I wasn't. At school we had to wear a uniform of course which I felt was so restrictive. I didn't want to be the same as everyone else. I like it when people seem to have a look on their face as if they're thinking 'she dresses differently'. I like to stand out from the crowd.

Nia: How would you describe your own personal style?

Nicola: I never wear anything that's the same from one day to another. Sometimes, I'll wear something feminine, sometimes I'll wear something grungy, it just depends how I'm feeling or how the weather is. One thing that's certain, is that colour plays an important part in every outfit I piece together.

Nia: What do you do then – do you just choose one colour or a mixture of colours?

Nicola: Sometimes, I'll wear one colour but I think mixing colour is quite nice too – colours that you wouldn't usually put together.

Nia: Do you know what surprises me about some of the items of clothing in your wardrobe?...One example is that you have four pairs of boots that are exactly the same but are just different colours!

Nicola: If I find something that I like and it's comfortable, I'll buy it in every possible colour. I know how the item's going to look and feel and it means that I can have different colours to piece an outfit together.

Nicola: I also buy a lot of things from charity shops too. I like this scarf. It's silk and it was only a pound and I wear it as a top.

Nia: Do you not worry that it's going to fall down?!

Nicola: No, I think I'm past worrying by now!

Nicola: These are Evisu and I bought them as a pair of jeans from a charity shop for only £3.50 but were £100 originally. I cut them into a pair of shorts. I adapt a lot of stuff from charity shops because it doesn't matter then if you make a mess of them, because they're so cheap.

Nicola: The green dress is from Iceland. I went over to study my uncle's artwork and I had to do a little shopping whilst I was there. There were lots of different clothes over there. The textures were completely different to the clothes we buy here.

Nicola: I also bought this top from Iceland. There's something quite old fashioned about the material but I like it. If you scrunch the material, the creases stay there if you don't iron the top but I find that quite useful, not having to iron!

Nicola: My friend's just think I'm nuts really. Sometimes, we'll go out for just a drink, and I dress completely over the top and I'm aware of that myself but I can't just be 'normal' as far as clothes go.

Nicola: I went to a fancy dress party one New Year's Eve and I bought a silver catsuit and it's hideous. It looked ok on the internet but when it was delivered, it was too late to find something else!

Nia: So you don't wear this in Nefyn then?

Nicola: No! I've tried, but people just stop me!

Nia: What's going to happen next then? Do you see yourself making a living out of clothes and fashion?

Nicola: I'm going to study an art foundation course at Bangor next year, and after that I'd like to go on to study fashion in London. I'd like to study design/fashion, so fingers crossed that I'll work hard enough to be accepted!

Nia: And what will be in your collection?

Nicola: Everything really. As you can see, I've so many different items of clothing – patterned items, plain items, and I just hope that I carry on collecting new items and continue to get new ideas year after year. I think if you came back in a few years, everything would've changed, I never keep my wardrobe the same for a long time.
