The athlete Non Evans is a woman that lives in a man’s world.

For someone who doesn’t understand much about rugby, when you get a cap, you get a real cap don’t you? Does that mean you have seventy eight caps in your house?

No, I’m afraid I don’t have seventy eight caps. You get your first cap, which, unlike the men, I had to pay £19.95 for mine, they get theirs for free. But you only get one cap - the first one. Then when I won my fiftieth cap I was given another one which was presented to me by Gareth Edwards.

Has the style of rugby shirts changed much over the years?

Yes, they’ve completely changed. When I won my first cap back in 1996, the shirts were much bigger and much thicker because they were men’s shirts. So I cut the bottom off and I trimmed the sleeves so it would fit me. But the shirt I wore when we beat England and won the Triple Crown this year was lighter because someone discovered that sixty percent of tackles are made by holding onto the material of the old shirts. But it’s very difficult to do that with these new shirts because they cling to your body. The only bad thing about them is if you have a little bit of a belly it shows everything!

You’ve done a variety of sports. When did your interest in sports begin?

I started to do Judo when I was about twelve years old in Portarddulais Judo club, and I started lifting weights when I went to collage when I was about eighteen years old. I competed in the Commonwealth Games in both sports in Manchester in 2002 - I was the first person ever to compete in two different sports in one Commonwealth Games.

The wardrobe you have by the front door is full of shoes. What’s your favourite style of shoe?

I had this wardrobe especially made when I bought this flat just to keep my shoes, and everything is tidy in this wardrobe. I don’t like to wear shoes like stilettos, I feel much more comfortable in wedges. Every shoe I own, even my flip-flops are wedges! But my favourite pair of all, is my Spice Girl boots, I’ve had these for years. That’s why I wear trousers that are flared, so that the trousers cover the boots, which makes me look really tall! Yet again, like the flip flops, I don’t feel like I’m wearing heels, it feels quit flat when you’re walking. And these brown boots are my old faithfuls, my favourites.

From seeing your shoe cupboard, I can see that there are two sides to your character.

Exactly! You can see the Non that is rather girly, that wears wedges to go to work and so on, and you can see the Non that plays rugby and does a lot of exercise.

I’ve always thought of you as someone who does sports all day, but you also work. What kind of clothes do you wear to work?

I work as a medical rep for pharmaceutical company. A lot of medical reps wear rather boring clothes, like black or dark blue pinstriped suits with a white shirt underneath, I dress smartly but I like to be different. This is one of my favourite jackets, it isn’t black, it isn’t blue - it’s rather colourful. I wear a shirt underneath the jacket with a pair of white, black or gray trousers. I always wear trousers that are rather low and flared at the bottom because I like to wear wedges; so all of my trousers are quite baggy.

Is it true that you don’t have a skirt or a dress in your wardrobe?

There isn’t one dress in my wardrobe! I’ve got strong legs, but they are a bit chunky and I don’t like to wear a skirt or a dress that show my legs. I feel big in tight clothing, I feel smaller in baggy clothing. It sounds wrong, but that’s what I feel comfortable in.
