Bright and cheerful clothes are a big part of Olwen Davies's wardrobe. Her home is full of clothes that she has made herself and collected through her interesting life over eighty years. Olwen was brought up in Wales and London and then went to study music and enjoyed a successful career as a singer and translator. She returned to Wales to retire and then became an active member of CND Cymru.
Nia: Your home is one big clothes wardrobe isn't it?!
Olwen: All my clothes are like children to me. They bring back memories.
Olwen: When I used to live in Covent Garden, I saw this dressing gown in a Gentelmen’s outfitters. It has red dragons all over. When I used to take part in protests during the Winter, I wore this dressing gown to London protests when it was cold.
Nia: You’re certainly a fiery person aren’t you?
Olwen: Well, when I believe in something and need to do something about it, I do it with real passion. I feel strongly about a number of things, we have to help all of these children that are dying all over the world and it’s important for me that I support peace movements.
Nia: You mention how passionately you feel about certain things, you’re passionate about your clothes too aren’t you?
Olwen: Yes, it’s something very creative to me. The material is the important thing really. If the material is good, you can make something that’s a little different. Nobody has the same item of clothing if I make them myself.
Nia: I don’t think anybody has an item of clothing like this either have they?!
Olwen: This was a gift when I went to South Africa. And the hat and scarf.
Nia: Your blue dress matches your eyes perfectly. This is the dress you wore for your 80th birthday?
Olwen: Yes at the Arts Centre. I made the dress whilst I was still living in Rome. I used to come back home every now and again and bought the material from John Lewis’s.
Nia: I’ve heard that you wore two outfits on your birthday?!
Olwen: I wore this black dress too. I made the red crochet around the neckline myself to liven the black up a bit.
Olwen: I wear my jet black necklace with the black dress. I think I paid about £25 for the necklace at the time but it’s worth much more by now as it’s handcrafted.
