What do your clothes mean to you?

I like good quality clothing, especially suits. I've never been afraid to stand out in a crowd. If you get a bespoke suits that fits you perfectly like a glove, then it's very hard to go back and wear something off the peg.

Rhydian

Have clothes always been important to you?

I've always liked nice clothes. It started when I went to Llandovery College where I'd always wear a blazer and dressed smartly. Dad was always strict and would tell me that I had to always look the part and I think that's stayed with me. The thing about suits is that I always look good in them, there are a lot of clothes that I can't wear and look good, including a leotard, but I know I look great in a suit!

Rhydian

Where do you go to buy your suits?

Apart from the fact that he's a highly regarded Savile Row tailor, Richard Anderson was also behind the sequined suit that I wore for the third X Factor show. Richard's suits are very smart and he's popular with men that work in the city and that have a lot of money, gentlemen. I tend to wear suits that are a little left field, especially when I'm performing. But Simon Cowell has now banned me from wearing sequins on stage because it's too camp for him!

Rhydian

For what occasion did you buy this black suit?

The last time I was on the X factor stage I sang The Impossible Dream and I wore this suit. This is a classic Richard Anderson suit but with a little bit of bling on it! That's one of the reasons I like Richard is that he works with me to create unique suits.

Rhydian

A lot of work goes into making these suits but how much do they cost?

They can vary from £3,500 upwards; I have one that's worth £7,000. The sequined suits cost from £4,000 to £5,000. I have between 35 and 40 suits, but of course I don't pay for them, Simon Cowell does!

Rhydian

Has your image changed since you've become famous?

Nobody forced me to do anything on the X Factor, but my image has changed since appearing on the programme. While I was on the X Factor I had a wonderful stylist called Faye Sawyer and Ben Mohapi was my hairdresser. I got on well with both of them and they gave me a new image, an image that stands out and that's what I wanted. Since the show ended I discovered that the show had spent more money on me than any of the other contestants, and apart from the fact that I came second, it worked!

Rhydian

Which is your favourite shop?

Most people that go to Tom Baker are performers or comedians. People like Rhys Ifans or Ant and Dec, Take That and Keith Flint from the Prodigy also come here. For me, the cut of the suit is the most important thing, and Tom's suits are cut brilliantly. He trained on Savile Row so he knows how to cut a suit. This black suit is like a frock coat, but the material is very different. It's some kind of lame material and looks like its soaking wet, but it's not.

Rhydian

Why do you like Tom Baker's clothes so much?

The best thing about Tom is that he works with sequins in any colour at any time. That's actually how I discovered Tom. I called nearly every tailor in London looking for someone that would make me a sequined suit. I knew that Richard was very good with sequins, but he's very expensive. I phoned one tailor and he asked if I knew about Tom Baker in Soho - that's how I heard about Tom, it was like a revelation.

Rhydian

Your stage clothes are very showbiz and attention grabbing aren't they?

There are a few people in the music industry that have influenced me over the years, people like Elvis, Shirley Bassey and David Bowie - performers that have developed their own unique style, and I hope that I can do the same over time.
