"I just love wearing really old clothes and my mother’s collected them, so she’s passed a lot of them down to me and I love seeing my wardrobe full of these really old clothes."

"I wouldn’t say that I’m a follower of fashion at all, or that I’ve got to have a certain style or anything like that, I just like to mix old things with new things, and they mean a lot more to me than some clothes that anyone could buy in any shop, these are a bit different and maybe there’s an element of me that likes to be different, I don’t know!"

Where shall we start, perhaps with your great grandmother’s clothes?

Well these are old fur coats, here’s my great grandmother’s, and this one was my grandmother’s. They’ve kept them in these little dresses so that they aren’t ruined...

I’ve got a hat which belonged to my great grandmother here and this one’s lovely, it’s like something which would be in fashion now isn’t it?

And I’ve got this shawl too, a woven shawl which is lovely. I’ve just put this little button on it and I wear it with that it the middle, so that’s nice.

What do you wear with the older clothes?

I really like them so I’ll wear them informally even, with a jumper and some boots, just casually, because I like the pattern, it’s great isn’t it? This is another woven skirt belonging to my grandmother, I really like these buttons, there are buttons right down to the ground, they’re lovely aren’t they?

Why do you enjoy wearing clothes from your grandmother?

I just like these old things and because I lost my grandmother when I was two years old, but my grandmother was with us until about three years ago, I feel like I know my grandmother because I’ve got her clothes, so I feel almost like I’m with her when I wear them, that it’s something sentimental too.

That blue colour’s lovely, and look – it’s on wool too.

This is also lovely, this is my grandmother’s old top with the sequins, isn’t it brilliant, it’s nice in the sun. It’s really warm too.

There are lots of sixties-influenced clothes around.

I’m lucky, I don’t have to pay for them! With these collars turned like this I think it looks like a coat Sali Mali would wear! This jacket belonged to my Aunty Megan, probably from the sixties, and I see these on the high street now, which is great, things always come back into fashion.

What’s the story behind that wonderful dress hanging on the door there?

My grandmother used to dress up really smart, and she used to go to really smart places with my grandfather. She went down to London to have her clothes made, and this is one of those dresses, some kind of ball-gown I suppose you’d call it.

There’s something nice about the fact that there’s a couple of marks on it, it just shows how old it is and that it’s not just something new, it would be nice to wear it sometimes wouldn’t it? What’s nice about my grandmother is that she never got old, she died when she was 47...

I noticed these cushions too, these are made of old woollen textiles too aren’t they?

I just make them up, and rather than put a cushion in, I just fill them with old clothes, because I can’t get rid of them...this is a pink dress my mum used to wear...

And this was a dress my mum wore when she was expecting, it’s nice that they’re coming back. This belonged to my great grandmother, this shirt, but you’d see this kind of thing in the shops today wouldn’t you?

What do these clothes mean to you?

By now, although they were my grandmother and great-grandmother’s clothes, I feel that they’re also mine.

Sometimes my mother and I will have a sentimental evening and we’ll just take out the old photos and old clothes, talk about them and share memories. My mum remembers her mother wearing them and I hope Nanw will also keep them for the generations to come, because they mean so much.
