Vivienne Westwood is one of the UK's best-known designers and is famous for her striking designs. Having established herself in the 70s punk era with her use of chains, tartan and ripped clothing, her tongue in cheek and luxurious designs are instantly recognisable within the fashion industry and her dresses are a treasured item of thousands of wardrobes.

Rhodri Ellis Owen is a businessman who treasures his Vivienne Westwood clothes.

Rhodri Ellis Owen

Can you explain to me why Vivienne Westwood's clothes appeal to you?

Her fashion is universal and appeals to people who want to buy something completely unique and who want to be a part of Vivienne Westwood's imagination in some way.

Rhodri Ellis Owen

You're fortunate enough to own two pieces by Vivienne Westwood. What's so special about the clothes you own?

It was an ambition of mine for a long time to own something by Vivienne Westwood, whatever that would be. I popped into a shop in Cowbridge and I saw this jacket on one of the shelves. It was in my size and I could hear it saying, 'buy me' and I just thought, go for it! I think it's been quite a shrewd investment because I've worn it nearly every day since I bought it and it's become an old reliable friend. It fits me well and isn't too zany as some would imagine Vivienne Westwood's clothes to be. It's quite conservative really, but with a small 'c'!

Rhodri Ellis Owen

You own a pair of Vivienne Westwood trousers as well doesn't you?

It's the same story behind these trousers. I thought, 'now that I have the jacket, I'm going to need something to wear with it'. When I saw these trousers, I thought that they were quite quirky with the traditional pinstripe and the lines cutting across here and there. I thought that they suited my personality as I love my work, but sometimes I tend to be off the wall with some things I do...

Rhodri Ellis Owen

Vivienne Westwood has become very successful in combining tradition with nonconformity. Is that also true of your personality?

I think that Vivienne Westwood's self confidence appeals to me and the way she uses her clothes as an extra element to her personality. That's the way I see clothes as well, and wearing them gives me confidence. It means I'm wearing something classic, a piece of art.

Rhodri Ellis Owen

As someone who runs his own communications company, do you think that Vivienne Westwood has been successful in marketing herself over the years?

Yes, I think she is genuinely unique and I admire the way she's developed the business into a world wide brand.

How did it feel getting married in a Vivienne Westwood dress?

It felt fantastic to be wearing the most amazing dress that you'll ever wear on your wedding day. Looking back, it's hard to believe that I wore a Vivienne Westwood dress for my wedding.

Lisa Hunt

Why did you choose this dress, was it because it was a Vivienne Westwood outfit?

I hadn't thought about buying a Vivienne Westwood dress, I didn't know what I wanted to tell you the truth. I didn't know what was going to suit me, and of course on your wedding day you want to look as amazing as you can. I'd always thought how nice it would be to try her clothes on, even if I wouldn't buy anything. So I went into the shop and I tried on a few dresses. In the end we came up with this combination. I looked in the mirror and turned to my mum and Mij, and both of them sat there and said, 'Oh, you look fantastic, you have to buy it', and that's what I did. The skirt is called May West and it's a fishtail with a short train at the back. The corset's quite tight, but lovely - it squeezes you in at all the right places! And then there's the jacket on top which fastens with a pretty bow at the front, it was that little detail that made it for me. The jacket feels like it somehow frames the whole outfit.

Lisa Hunt

There's a little blue bow inside the corset, do you know why that is?

I didn't notice the bow until my final fitting and I think it's a nice touch. I don't own anything else by Vivienne Westwood but I think her work's very interesting. I don't necessarily agree with everything she says and I don't always like the clothes she designs. For me, it was this dress that made me fall in love with her clothes more than anything else.
