A young farmer from Llanwrin gets a stylish new wardrobe

William Evans

We’re the fourth generation to farm here. When I’m up in the mountains on a fine day, I could be walking around naked, it wouldn’t bother me, it’s not all that important what you wear here, but you have to be comfortable and dress for the weather.

I work full-time on the farm with my father and my brother. I’ve finished Young Farmers, I’ve got too old! I play rugby for Machynlleth, try to keep my place in the first team, it’s a bit of a job!

I go out a bit in Machynlleth, Aberystwyth, Royal Welsh, Sesiwn Fawr and anything that’s going really!

These are my work clothes, to be honest. They’re usually old Saturday night clothes. When they get a little too scruffy for Saturday nights, they come down the line and I wear them on the farm. I’m not one to go shopping much. I’m not a Cardi or anything, but I don’t see the point of spending too much on clothes because you just get sick of them in the end. Either they get too small for me, or people say they’re out of fashion, I don’t know. I’m proud that I’m a farmer, but I don’t want to look stereotypical. There’s fashion out there so I’d like to try and ‘get in the groove’, so to speak!

Nia: Are you looking forward to the transformation?

Yes I am to tell you the truth; I’m looking forward to seeing what she’s got on offer, in terms of clothes of course! It’ll be interesting to see what she can do with me. I’m quite a hard one to persuade to do new things. But I hear that Eleanor can be quite a stern lady!

William Evans

Eleanor: Do you like this shirt?

Yes I do, especially in the summer I like short-sleeved shirts.

You’ve got really muscular arms, but the thing with a shirt like this is it’s going to date because of the print that’s all over it. Also, it’s not of a very good quality, so it’s going to lose its shape quickly. And I think it’s a bit young for you now, it’s time for you to move on and start to develop a more sophisticated image.

I can’t even say that word!

Pink has been fashionable for men for centuries, and I know you can wear strong colours!

I find it more sexy for men to wear long-sleeved shirts. The stripes on this shirt are very traditional and classic, so they won’t date.

This is a suit I bought back in 2001 when I was Chairman of the Young Farmers. But I’ve worn it to so many funerals and things, I’m sick of it to tell you the truth. It’s a shame because it cost about a hundred pounds!

The shape doesn’t suit your body, and it doesn’t make the most of you. A more traditional suit would look better, where you’ve got the lapels going down the front, because you’ve got quite a big top half.

You’re tall, you’ve got long legs, but it’s important when you go out shopping to make sure the jacket is the right length, not too long or too short.

Let’s talk a little bit about you. You’re a very handsome guy, and you’ve got a bit of a ‘baby face’ which is a good thing because you’ll look younger as you get older! But because of this, there are some clothes you shouldn’t wear. You need to wear things that are a little more sophisticated, so I’ve chosen lots of colourful jumpers and there’s a pink jumper here! I know you can wear strong colours, but you can also wear things which are more subtle.

I feel a bit smarter and a little more proud of myself. Certainly Eleanor has opened my eyes a bit.

William Evans

Nia: You’ve come a long way from the t-shirt and jeans with the holes, oil and dirt on them!

I feel a lot smarter but I won’t be wearing these for work!

I’ve enjoyed trying all the clothes on and trying to be comfortable in front of the camera, trying not to look stupid. I don’t know how successful I’ve been!

I’ve enjoyed the experience in terms of the clothes. I’ve tried things on that I wouldn’t have in a shop. With some of the clothes, I wouldn’t wear them down the White Horse or anything, maybe to Cardiff, London or somewhere where I wouldn’t look so out of place!

Clothes sometimes have the power to make you feel quite different, so when you’re wearing some of these things do you feel different any different?

I felt like I was worth more, that I was more respectable and a fuller person, if you know what I mean.
