The evidence of changes to come, first seen in the 1950s, really came into fruition in the 1960s. At the beginning of the decade, the emphasis was still on ladylike dressing, with no short skirts, full petticoats and girdles. Yet the shape was soon transformed by new ideas emerging from the British pop scene.
Mary Quant was amongst the first to popularize the simple geometric shapes typical of the 1960s. The miniskirt was the most revolutionary garment of the decade, and was suited to the youth market. Women wore pale makeup and emphasized their eyes with kohl, mascara and false eyelashes. Hair was long and straight or worn in a shaped bob as invented by the hairdresser Vidal Sassoon.
Designers of clothes and textiles celebrated modernity. Space-age silver was mixed with primary colours taken from Pop and Op Art. Revolutionary fashion materials were introduced, including shiny PVC and polyesters.
