Politically, socially and economically the 1970s was a time of great upheaval and consequently fashion reacted against the futuristic, mass-produced fashion, preferring a more individual look.

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, many young people had become disillusioned with the materialistic post-war mood and had turned to Eastern cultures, providing fashion with a new influence in the form of kaftans, long skirts and gipsy blouses. Easier travel meant that people brought ideas and accessories from abroad.

Girls wore their hair long and parted down the middle, and make-up became more natural. The more relaxed view of gender that was emerging meant that there was a new freedom of choice for both sexes, and consequently jeans and flares became favorites for men and women.

For the evening, women often wore trouser suits, full length maxi dresses by Halston, halter-neck catsuits or flared Empire-line dresses with embroidered bodices and full sleeves.
