Below is a listing of the major Christian events this year.

All dates are shown using the Gregorian (Western) calendar.

January

    Lent is the period of forty days which comes before Easter in the Christian calendar, traditionally a time of fasting and reflection.

March

  • St David's Day

    Saint David, or Dewi Sant as he's called in Welsh, is the patron saint of Wales.

April

  • Palm Sunday

    Palm Sunday
    The sixth and last Sunday of Lent. Marks the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem and the start of Holy Week.
  • Good Friday

    Good Friday
    Good Friday is the Friday before Easter. It commemorates the execution of Jesus by crucifixion.
  • Easter

    Easter
    Christians celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ - his return from death after the Crucifixion. The most important Christian festival.

May

  • Ascension Day

    Ascension Day
    Ascension Day celebrates Jesus's ascension to heaven after he was resurrected on Easter Day.
  • Whitsun

    Whitsun
    The seventh Sunday after Easter, commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples and the birth of the Christian Church.

November

  • Remembrance Sunday

    Remembrance Sunday
    Remembrance Day is a day to commemorate the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war, specifically since the First World War.

December

  • Start of Advent

    Start of Advent
    The beginning of the ecclesiastical year on the Sunday closest to November 30. Advent is the season before Christmas.
  • Christmas Eve
    24/12/12
    Christmas Eve
    The day before Christmas Day.
  • Christmas Day
    25/12/12
    Christmas Day
    Christmas is a Christian holy day that marks the birth of Jesus, the son of God. Jesus' birth, known as the Nativity, is described in the New Testament of the Bible.

January

  • Epiphany
    06/01/13
    Epiphany
    Celebrates the visit of the wise men (the Magi) to the infant Jesus. In the East, where it originated, the Epiphany celebrates the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist in the River Jordan.

Some denominations of Christianity also celebrate Saints’ days, which happen on fixed dates every year.
