Dechrau Canu Dechrau Canmol

Programme 27

In this programme the congregational singing comes from the Urdd campus in Llangrannog, and amongst the hymns are modern favourites Newyddion Braf, Aed yn Newydd, I Ddyddiau Glanio ar y Lloer, Heddiw Ddoe ac Yfory, Cerddwn Ymlaen, Diolch am Weddi'r Arglwydd and Ceisiwch yn Gyntaf. Martyn Geraint will be presenting from several different locations around the well-known village.

One of these locations will be St Caranog's Church. The original church was built out of trees at the beginning of the sixth century, and the current church dates back to 1885. Caranog was the grandson of Ceredig, who gave his name to Ceredigion county, and there are churches in Cornwall, Somerset and Brittany which are also named after him. Most of the first hymn dates back to the middle of the 18th century, but the chorus was added by one of the areas most notable characters – the late Reverend Elfed Lewys, Newyddion Da a Ddaeth I’n Bro.

There will also be a conversation with Ian ap Dewi, who doesn’t describe himself as a religious person but who gets comfort and reassurance by attending the Wig Chapel. It was in this chapel also that Ann Tudfor Jones received much-needed support to help her through one of the darkest times of her life when her husband died.
