Television adaptation of Y Stafell Ddirgel by Marion Eames, one of the most popular Welsh novels of all time. The story retraces the persecution of the Quakers who lived in Meirionnydd in the seventeenth century.
Last in the series. Rowland struggles with his feelings following Dorcas' murder. Will he be able to contain the urge to strike back in revenge?
The relationship between Rowland and Marged intensifies but she yearns for his love not just his respect. A Brynmawr family member suffers the atrocity of the ducking chair and the net tightens as the authorities jail Ellis Puw. And who has their sadistic revenge on Lisa and Dorcas, left on their own in Brynmawr?
Tragedy comes to the Brynmawr family and Rowland has to choose between his faith and his family. Lisa enjoys the forbidden fun of the May Fair until she falls into Huw Morris' lascivious arms. Robert Owen is still languishing in jail while the Quakers decide on his successor. But Rowland has to pay as he suffers attacks from the townsfolk.
What secret is Cadi keeping, and who has their eye on Lisa? Meg realises that she can no longer hide the truth. Her terrible mistake has put her own health in jeopardy as well as her unborn child's. Rowland's absence from church attracts the authorities' venom and Hywel Vaughan gives him a stern warning as the Tolerance Laws are revoked.
The atmosphere in Brynmawr is cold and aloof as Rowland deals with Meg's betrayal. As a result, his relationship with his unassuming servant, Ellis Puw, and the local Quakers intensifies as he attends their religious meetings in secret. Meg also pays a secret visit as she looks for comfort in Hengwrt and in Hywel Vaughan's arms. But the malicious eyes of servant Huw Morris, (Bryn Fôn) are watching everything. Rowland is worried about the future of his new friends as Hywel and the new Judge, (John Ogwen), plot to ignore the Tolerance Laws and persecute the Quakers to their deaths. And Meg decides to visit a local witch to solve one big problem that's worrying her.
Adaptation of Marion Eames' classic novel whose story presents some of the most famous characters in Welsh literature. These include Rowland Ellis, Squire of Brynmawr (Ryland Teifi), and his beautiful but selfish wife, Meg (Lowri Steffan). The turbulent period of the Quakers in Dolgellau, North Wales forms the dramatic backdrop.
In this first episode, it's the time of the town fair and a year since Meg and Rowland got married. Everything is rosy between them as they await the birth of their first child. But it's a different story in the town as the Quakers are persecuted unmercifully by the authorities, including the Squire of Hengwrt Mansion, Hywel Vaughan (Ian Saynor). And as Rowland yearns for tolerance and Meg for another man's caresses, the seeds of betrayal and deception are planted in Brynmawr.
