ABOUT BEEF
THE AFTERMATH
- British beef has never been as safe thanks to evermore-stringent health and safety regulations that now exist within the industry. Additionally, when exports were at an extremely low level Welsh beef led the way in the attempts to renew trade with foreign countries. Indeed, the first foreign export (to Netherlands) from Britain came from Wales and each box was deliberately stamped with the Welsh Beef label so as to try and avoid the stigma that was said to be attached to the British brand name.
- Welsh beef has come a long way in such a short time since the dark days of BSE and foot-and-mouth but it is also fighting an alteration in the publics eating habits, which has caused a slightly notable decline in beef consumption. However, the good news is that, following an intensive marketing campaign, beef exports are approaching pre-crisis levels - although the French remain a difficult obstacle to overcome!
- Despite the small decline in its consumption and the crises that it has faced over the past decade, beef remains a popular choice amongst consumers with Welsh beef becoming more and more the choice of the connoisseur. To prove this, the giant supermarket chain Tesco have signed an exclusive contract with over 600 Welsh farms to supply all 45 of their stores in Wales with Welsh beef. This has come as significant boost to the Welsh farmer and is a clear indication of the kind of public support that surrounds the long-standing tradition of beef production in Wales.
