ABOUT COMFORT FOOD
COMFORT FOOD: A LINK TO CHILDHOOD
If we resort to comfort eating as an emotional aid, it is hardly surprising that we, therefore, tend to indulge when weÍre feeling under the weather to help ensure a speedy recovery. We crave simple foods such as beans on toast, toasted sandwiches and soup to give us the energy to tackle an illness probably because this is what we were given by our parents (usually our mothers) whenever we were poorly during childhood. Moreover, children are often given certain foods to help cheer them up if theyÍre feeling down or as a treat if theyÍve behaved well.
Consequently, this is why comfort foods are primarily associated with adulthood because they remind us of how good they made us feel when we were children. If a craving for comfort food begins to arise, we often desire it in the form we first enjoyed it and it helps to remind us of feeling warm, safe and happy. In general, we as adults have a yearning for foods that are linked to specific personal events in our lives that stimulate a pleasurable reaction within us whenever tasted or smelled.
