COMFORT FOOD

"When I’m in trouble, eating is the only thing that comforts me"

      - Oscar Wilde

COMFORT FOOD AND OUR EMOTIONS

Stress isn’t the only reason for resorting to the psychological relief rewarded by comfort eating. A general feeling of sadness, depression, loneliness and even boredom can often evoke a craving for the comfort food required for stimulating a more pleasurable emotional state of well-being.

Conversely, there is strong evidence to suggest that most people indulge in comfort foods to relax or to enhance a feeling of happiness. That is, when we are jubilant or express a sense of satisfaction it is not uncommon to then celebrate or reward ourselves with our favourite comfort foods to put the icing on the cake, so to speak. For example, it is very common for people to celebrate some good news or a job well done by treating themselves to their favourite foods - usually by dining out.

Furthermore, it is claimed that our emotions and moods may actually determine the foods that we eat for comfort. That is, we might crave a plate of chips when we’re happy, open a packet of chocolate biscuits if we’re a little down-in-the-dumps, or grab a packet of crisps if we’re just plain bored and need something to do to pass the time.
