ABOUT COMFORT FOOD
WHAT IS COMFORT FOOD
"When Im in trouble, eating is the only thing that comforts me"
- Oscar Wilde
The foods that usually fall into the comfort food bracket are, more often than not, high in fat and/or sugar - that is, sweet and stodgy foods. Nevertheless, although these foods are the norm when comfort eating, people do also indulge in healthier options such as soups, vegetables and pasta. It is difficult to precisely determine a suitable definition for comfort food but we can see that most restaurants serve it because the main reason we eat out is for a pleasurable gastronomic experience!
Additionally, certain types of comfort foods are relentlessly advertised on television. Imagery of fast food (E.g. McDonalds and KFC), pizzas, chocolate, cakes or the latest offers from the big supermarket chains do plenty to plant suggestions of the perfect feast into our imaginations from which the utmost pleasure can be derived. Such suggestions can instil strong cravings, which can practically impel a person to satisfy it as quickly as possible in order to abate it successfully.
A recent poll undertaken by the BBC for their series entitled The Nations Favourite Food revealed Britains top ten comfort foods. Many might beg to differ but they are as follows;
1. Chocolate
2. Tea & Biscuits
3. Toast (usually with some sort of topping)
4. Ice-cream
5. A fry-up
6. Sausage & Mash
7. Soup
8. Fruit crumble (e.g. apple, apricot, etc.)
9. Steamed puddings
10. Rice pudding
