METHOD
Preheat the oven to 180ºc. Prepare a 2lb loaf tin lined with cling film. Boil the dates in the water. Add the bicarbonate of soda. In a food processor, cream the eggs, sugar and butter before adding the flour and the vanilla essence. Pour the mixture into the loaf tin and bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes.
The sauce:
In a saucepan, boil the cream, sugar and treacle until the sugar has melted. Serve the cake warm with a spoonful of sauce.
