Croeso i ‘Cofio’ – to remember. This programme blends live cyfweliadau (interviews) and ffilm archif (archive film) to look at the lives of some of those who have made a great contribution to Wales. The programmes are presented by Heledd Cynwal from Llandeilo.
Heledd’s guest this week is Gareth Edwards, Wales’ greatest chwaraewr rygbi (rugby player).
Gareth was born in 1947 in Gwauncaegurwen. His father was a glowr (miner). At 19, he won his first Welsh cap against France in Paris. He was to win 53 caps for Wales.
This was where Gareth Edwards started his rugby career. He was a good all round sportsman.
In 1968, Gareth was made Capten Cymru (Captain of Wales). He was only 20 at the time. At the time, some thought that he was too young for the captaincy – but they were proved wrong.
Brass bands were an important part of Gareth’s early life. This is Llanelli in 1963.
In 1971 when Gareth was 23 he joined the Llewod (Lions) in Seland Newydd (New Zealand) for his first gêm brawf (test match).
Gareth is a keen golfer and fisherman.
He has played an important part in TV fishing programmes.
