This week Iolo and Shân have come to the Llannerchymedd area, Anglesey. They talk to the people who live and work here.
Llannerchymedd is an old market town. It was an important town because of the copper works on Parys Mountain and there were two markets here. Today many of the shops have closed and it is quiet.
Llyn Alaw lake is near the town. In the sixth century two saints used to meet here – Cybi and Seiriol.
There were 50 windmills on Anglesey. Today there is one – Melin Llynnon and it is over 200 years old. Iolo goes to see the mill and to talk to Lloyd Jones who works there. Iolo sees how they make flour.
There were 250 shoemakers in Llannerchymedd. They used to make clogs and shoes. Shân goes to see Linda Jones who likes shoes very much. She has over 100 shoes in the house!
Iolo goes around Llannerchymedd with Donald Glyn Pritchard from the History Society. They go for a walk on the old railway between Amlwch and Llangefni. Llannerchymedd station used to be very busy because there were two markets in the town, but it has closed since 1964. Today they are making a museum there.
Plas Coedana farm is Brian and Fiona Thomas’ home. They run the Beef Direct company on the farm. Here they prepare beef, lamb and pork and sell the meat to customers. Shân goes to talk to Brian.
Donald and Iolo go the top of Y Foel mountain. There was a radio station here during the Second World War. The men in the station helped American aeroplanes go to airport in Valley.
Llewod Amlwch is a football team for disabled people. The people come to the leisure centre every Thursday evening to play football. Shân talks to John Llewelyn Pritchard, the trainer, and also to Alison and Dafydd from the team.
Iolo goes to see the Deri Môn company and talks to Gwen McCreadie. The company smokes food – meat, fish, birds and cheese. Iolo sees how they smoke the food and eats some trout from Llyn Alaw.
Geraint Jones is a poet and Shân talks to him on the street. Geraint has a surprise for Shân; he has composed an ‘englyn’ (poem) about Shân and Iolo.
Shân goes to Drws y Coed Farm to talk to Beth Cowell from the drag hunt. The dogs don’t run after a fox; they run after a smell. Shân goes on horseback with the hunt.
Nia Thomas is on ‘Y Post Cyntaf’ on Radio Cymru every morning. Nia comes from Llannerchymedd. Iolo goes to talk to her on the Farm where she lives with her husband, Gwyndaf. There are Limousin cattle and geese on the farm and Iolo wants one of the geese for Christmas dinner!
