July 2009. Dai has come to Pennal near Machynlleth to see Sam Evans MBE.
Sam is famous as a farm machine man. He’s 85 years old and he still looks after old machines.
Sam has looked after machines since the Second World War. He looked after this Jones Baler from 1943 until 1961.
Sam remembers how life was before machines came to the farm. Many men were needed to do the work.
Sam and his friends are members of The Old Machines Club. Douglas Williams was the man who started the club in 1986. They look after the machines and show them in shows to raise money for good causes.
The club was 21 years old in 2007. They published this book to celebrate and raise money for cancer research.
Sam wasn’t a horse man – he liked machines. Today he still enjoys cleaning old machines.
During the war Sam worked for the WarAg (War Agricultural Committee). They arranged the work of farmers and agricultural workers.
This is the cat - the “Caterpillar”; it is a slow machine. It can go over rough and stony ground.
Sam was the first man to receive an MBE for his work with agricultural machines.
This is the little Ford – the Fordson. The Fordson could pull three machines.
Sam has collected many old machines that are broken. He makes new parts himself because you can’t buy new parts. But he enjoys repairing old things.
