June 2009. This week Dai Jones visits Braich y Saint farm, Cricieth – the home of Wil Owen and his family. They have been farming here since 1986.
The farm looks over the Llŷn Peninsula and the sea. To the east are the mountains of Snowdonia.
The old pilgrims’ way goes through the farm. The old Deunawd well is on the farm; this is where the pilgrims stopped to have a drink. Deunawd is the name given to the farm’s herd.
Wil has won many competitions with his cattle. He goes to very many shows.
This heifer was going to the Highland Show in Scotland. Wil bought her in September 2008 and she had a bull for the first time in 2009.
The sheep of this farm are Welsh sheep crossed with Border Leicester. About 50% go on the hook and 50% go to mart.
Gwilym, Wil’s eldest son, looks after the farm when his father goes to the shows.
Wil has remarried to Eleri and they have two small children.
Dai goes with Eleri to see the old farmhouse that is 400 years old. They let the house to people in summer.
Dai goes to see Robin Owen, Wil’s uncle. Robin is 92 years old and still goes to buy sheep.
