This week Aled and Alex go to Brittany. They go on a tour around the country with the company BLB Tourism France. You can choose what kind of tour you want and how long.
Aled and Alex travel with a tour guide called Alain in an old Citroen 2CV car. They have chosen to go on a tour around Brittany to taste the local food.
They both go to the city of Vannes in southern Brittany. There is a very pretty port here and old medieval streets. The Breton name for the city is Gwened. The meaning of Gwened is ‘white place’. This is where they harvested salt.
Apparently the colours of the Brittany flag come from the colours of the weasel’s coat. The name of the flag in Breton is Gwenn-ha-du (gwyn a du – black and white).
Aled and Alex go to Saint-Goustan harbour and enjoy a traditional meal. Brittany is very famous for sea food.
Aled goes on a stained glass course in Tyskol. The course is run by Claire Morris who comes from Scotland originally. Aled goes on a one day course here.
Aled stays in a rural gîte in southern Brittany. There was a village here but today there’s a collection of self catering accommodation which sits amongst 15 acres of gardens.
Aled and Alex go to the Simone Biscuiterie shop. They eat all kinds of traditional biscuits and cakes.
They go to La Maison D’armorine where they make traditional caramel. The company started selling sweets at the seaside in Quiberon after the Second World War.
Alex goes to Ti Forn. Originally it was a Bakehouse but now it’s a cultural centre. She goes on a French course here. You can go on other courses here too like creative writing, art and pottery.
They finish their tour on an oyster farm. Oysters are very popular in Brittany and people eat them raw as a starter. Aled and Alex get the opportunity to taste the oysters.
