This week Aled and Alex are going to the Isle of Man. They cross from Birkenhead to Douglas – a four hour journey.
In Douglas there is a promenade with many hotels, a shopping centre and a theatre. The Gaiety Theatre is very popular. It’s an old theatre and you can go on a guided tour on Saturdays in the summer.
Tynwald is the parliament of the Isle of Man. It’s been here since 979 – the oldest parliament in the world.
Alex goes for a cookery lesson in Douglas with Alan Stein. She learns how to cook scallops and then she enjoys a meal in the restaurant.
Aled and Alex go the Peel in the west. Here they visit a factory which salts and smokes herrings.
Alex goes to the town of Castletown in the south. There are many interesting buildings here like The House of Keys – the old Isle of Man parliament building. On the Market Square there is a clock – a gift by Elizabeth I. The clock has been here for over 400 years, but now there is only one hand on the clock!
Then she goes to see the castle and the exhibition which tells the story of the castle.
In Castletown Alex goes on a course to learn how to make silver jewellery. There is a ceramics course here too.
Sometimes it’s very busy on the island, and you can also stay in a private house. Aled stays in a farmhouse.
The Isle of Man is famous for the TT Races. Every year 35,000 people come here to watch the racing. After visiting the track Aled goes to the A.R.E. motor cycle museum in Kirk Michael.
Then Aled goes on a journey in a sidecar around the island. They visit Milntown mansion where the Welshman, Sir Clive Edwards lived. He left the mansion and his motor bikes to the people of the Isle of Man.
Aled and Alex visit the Venture Centre where you can go on walking tours, canoeing and climbing. Are they going to have fun here?
