S4C extends the appeal of its programmes by providing English subtitles. The subtitles are suitable for non-Welsh speakers, mixed language homes and the deaf and hard of hearing.
Some programmes are also shown with burnt-in subtitles (BIST), usually repeat showings of popular dramas, as well as other programmes. Subtitles are also available on our on demand service on the web, Clic.
The Welsh language subtitling service is aimed at Welsh learners as well as Welsh speaking deaf or hard of hearing viewers, learners and those who lack confidence in speaking Welsh, to enjoy the programmes on S4C.
The service provided to S4C by Acen Cyf includes sound effect captions for deaf viewers. 10 hours of Welsh subtitles are provided each week. Any programme which has this service will be noted on the listings page.
An audio description service is provided for the blind and partially blind through the medium of Welsh. This service contains additional descriptions to enhance the viewers' enjoyment.
Audio description consists of a verbal commentary that fills in the gaps in the programme where there is no dialogue, thus enabling viewers with a serious sight problem to watch the programme independently without the need for a sighted person having to be present in order to explain the plot.
The commentary includes descriptions of such things as action sequences, facial expression, body language, costume and scenery.
Some programmes on S4C are shown with a British Sign Language interpreter at the side of the screen. More information about Signing
