Services for Welsh Learners

S4C is committed to helping people learn and improve their Welsh. We do so in a number of ways, including:

Website

The S4C web site has been built to comply with all Priority 1 and Priority 2 WCAG checkpoints while addressing as many of the Priority 3 checkpoints as possible. Other S4C satellite and programme web sites including the S4C learners site are due to be brought in to line with the main site but some of them may currently fail to reach any of the standards set out in the guidelines. These will be re-built and published on a role-out schedule.

S4C’s learners’ website offers background information on some of the Channel’s programmes and provides language exercises through the use of puzzles and programme clips. The website’s aim is to help learners understand and enjoy S4C’s Welsh language programmes better and the material is available on five language levels, from Not Started Yet to Higher and Confidence.

Subtitles

These are available in Welsh for learners and in English for beginners. They are accessed through the television remote control or through the interactive red button.

Red button

You can now access Help for Learners through the interactive red button on digital television. The service includes additional information about programmes and associated items that will enhance the enjoyment of S4C programmes. Like the Website, the information has been adapted to different levels. The service is easy to use by pressing the red button on your remote control and available on satellite and Freeview.

Programmes

S4C broadcasts television programmes especially for learners. These are shown on digital channel S4C digidol at 12.00, Mondays to Fridays in the dysgu@12 slot and include programmes like Welsh in a Week, Talk About Welsh and Ding Dong. We also show a news round-up in basic Welsh on S4C on Sunday afternoons called Yr Wythnos.
