David Beckham pays tribute to his former Manchester United team mate, Welsh hero Ryan Giggs in an exclusive interview for S4C’s European football programme Sgorio, to be broadcast tonight on S4C at 11.05pm.
Sgorio presenter Morgan Jones secured an exclusive interview with the Real Madrid star at the club’s Bernabeu Stadium just after his last match for the Spanish side which clinched Spain’s premiership football La Liga title with a 3-1 home win against Real Mallorca.
Sgorio is available both on analogue and all digital platforms in Wales and on Sky channel 134 in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
In the interview, an emotional Beckham, celebrating on the field with his three sons, tells Morgan Jones about his sense of pride and achievement in having won the Spanish league with Real Madrid before moving to the USA to play for Los Angeles’ LA Galaxy.
Then, David Beckham, 32, who has conducted a number of interviews with Sgorio over the years, pays tribute to former Wales captain, Ryan Giggs, who just over two weeks ago retired from international football.
David Beckham says on Sgorio tonight, “Well done to Ryan Giggs – I think he’s an incredible person, an incredible player and he deserves his OBE.”
Viewers will be able to enjoy highlights of this match tonight on S4C, along with highlights of the Barcelona and Seville matches, the two other teams who were in the hunt for the championship in what was the most exciting finale to the Spanish league season in years.
Morgan Jones adds, “The stage was set for one of the most dramatic final days in the La Liga for decades and it looked like the championship was heeding for Barcelona until the last quarter. After such a dramatic finale, David Beckham was naturally elated and emotional, having had to make the decision in January to leave the club. However, he still had the time think of his old pal, Ryan Giggs, and to congratulate him, via S4C, on receiving his OBE.”
