Lifting the lid on Antur Waunfawr

A new documentary series goes behind the scenes of Antur Waunfawr, a centre for adults with learning difficulties set up 25 years ago.

The centre is now a successful commercial venture employing over a hundred people and the three-part series, Antur Waunfawr, provides a sensitive portrayal of different aspects of the centre's work.

Celebrating quarter of a century

The social enterprise Antur Waunfawr was established in 1984 by the late Gwynn Davies in order to offer work opportunities, and a chance to contribute to society, to those with learning disabilities. Antur Waunfawr is now one of the area's principal employers, providing work opportunities on three sites.

The main Antur Waunfawr site is based in the village of Waunfawr, near Caernarfon, and includes a café and gardens. The Warws Werdd (Green Warehouse) on the Cibyn industrial estate in Caernarfon, is where old furniture is restored and sold, while a Recycling Centre, a joint venture with Gwynedd Council, also located on the Cibyn estate, is where Antur workers are responsible for sorting paper and plastic.

Workers

In the first programme broadcast this week, we meet several of the centre's workers, including Meical Jones, who works as a receptionist in the Administrative Office and who's also following a computer course at local further education college, Coleg Menai; Anwen Fletcher, who works in the café and also helps with the outside catering service; Mel Parry who works in the gardens and who's very fond of birds and trees; and Dafydd Emrys, Lee Williams and Dyfed Hughes who work at the Recycling Centre in Caernarfon.
