Cefn Gwlad

Cefn Gwlad

In the first of a new series of Cefn Gwlad, presenter Dai Jones visits Bodysgawen Farm in Llannefydd near Denbigh. The farm has won prizes all over Wales and Britain for its pasture.

Bodysgawen is a dairy farm run by Arthur and Marian Owen. Arthur's brother, Alun, runs the farm next door, and both men work closely together, lending a helping hand with the milking.

Dai will learn more about their system of farming and see why the family has won Wales's Best Grassland competition a number of times and also Britain's Best Grassland competition in 2007.

"The family specialises in pasture, but, there's also a superb herd of milking cows on the farm," says Dai Jones.

Dai will learn about the milking processes at Bodysgawen. The parlour is three years old, and all the cows have an electronic tag which is read by a computer as they come in for milking. This makes things easier and means they can milk the cows faster.

"We try to make things as simple and straightforward as possible. If it's easy, anyone can do it. So if I'm going away for a weekend, someone else can take over," says Arthur.

"It's a pleasure to milk now. We can milk 230 cows in about two hours where previously, it took three and a half hours to milk 170 cows," he adds.

In the new series, Dai Jones will visit Plas Llanerchaeron in Cardigan, where the second Wales and the World Ploughing Competition was held earlier this year. He will also visit the Dolwen area near Abergele to find out more about one of the best-known studs for Welsh Mountain Ponies, Coed Coch, and he'll try cross-country running with Kate Jones, an Aberystwyth vet.
