Cefn Gwlad

Former head teacher teaches local children about rural life

The new series of Cefn Gwlad starts on S4C on Monday, 31 October, as Dai Jones, Llanilar takes us to meet more colourful characters in rural Wales. The journey begins on the Llŷn Peninsula, in the Efailnewydd area, with Gwyndaf Jones on Tanrallt farm.

Gwyndaf was a primary school head teacher for nearly twenty years, and his father Robert is also a retired head teacher. Teaching is in the blood for this family as Gwyndaf's mother was also a teacher and his two sisters have followed the same career path.

After years working in various primary schools, Gwyndaf decided it was time for a change. The family has been at Tanrallt farm since about 1850 and Gwyndaf now continues the farming tradition.

Despite leaving teaching, he still keeps contact with the world of education and invites local school children to the farm to learn about rural life. One of the outbuildings has been especially adapted to hold the lessons.

"Each spring, local primary school children come here for a day. I hold about half a dozen workshops each year," explains Gwyndaf.

"I show them the old farming equipment - some pieces originally from Tanrallt, and others I've collected from other places over the years. It gives them some idea of how the past differs from today and how people lived years ago," adds Gwyndaf.

The second programme in the series next Monday (7 November) takes us to Cardigan to meet Gareth James who runs a busy agricultural contracting company. In the third programme (14 November) we'll be among the buyers and sellers at Bryncir Mart, in Eifionydd.
