Cefn Gwlad

Over the past quarter of a century S4C viewers have welcomed Dai Jones, Llanilar into their living rooms, but how much do we actually know about the life of this likeable presenter? In a special edition of Cefn Gwlad Dai takes a trip down memory lane in the company of his brother, Trefor and sister, Glenys.

Dai Jones' family upped sticks and moved from Ceredigion to London to seek their fortune. His parents, Magi and Dic met in London, married and bought a dairy shop on Kingsdown Road, Islington.

But with the dark days of the Second World War threatening London, the two boys were sent to stay with their uncle and aunt, who had no children of their own, on their farm in Ceredigion. Trefor returned to London in the Sixties, but Dai decided to stay in Wales.

"I couldn't imagine leaving Ceredigion to return to London. I found it hard enough leaving the farm to go on brief holidays to the big city!"

In the programme Dai visits Trefor and Glenys in London. The old shop has been demolished and Dai feels like a fish out of water as he strolls along the busy streets. "Trefor and Glenys are happy in the city, but nothing beats the countryside for me!" he says.

Trefor works as a taxi driver in London for twelve weeks every year and spends the rest of his time relaxing in Spain.

During the programme city slicker Trefor returns to Ceredigion and spends time catching up with relatives and revisiting old haunts.

After visiting his birthplace in London and living the high life in Spain, Dai is more adamant than ever that 'there's no place like home', and 'home' of course is Ceredigion.
