Youngsters from one of North Wales's most deprived areas go in search of a second chance and a new beginning as they bin the junk food and takeaways to establish a new community scheme, Cegin Peblig (Peblig Kitchen) or Cegin Cofi.
A three-part series follows the group from the Ysgubor Goch council estate in Caernarfon as they set up and renovate a mobile kitchen with the hope of training youngsters to cook healthy meals and change their way of life.
Cegin Peblig is the brainchild of local volunteer Kenny Khan. He owned the Tafarn y Werin restaurant in Caernarfon and has a range of experience in the food and catering industry. Kenny also lives on the estate and comes face-to-face with the problems there on a daily basis. He's also experienced a similar background to the boys on the estate - law-breaking, fighting and time in prison.
This new scheme will use Kenny's culinary skills and life experiences to improve the quality of food and the standard of living of the local people.
Kenny explains, "Starting with the van, I want to show people there is a better way of eating. I want to teach them how to cook fresh food and watch them try it for themselves. And no more chips. The chip shop is now closed! People on the estate find it difficult to cook healthy meals and tend to go for takeaways, pizza or chips every day. They deserve better."
Ysgubor Goch council estate is one of the most disadvantaged and troubled areas in North West Wales and the residents and their social problems are notorious in the region. But in Cegin Cofi, we'll experience the daily challenges faced by the estate's young people. There is a great spirit among the boys. They want to change their lifestyles for the better and work together to create something that will benefit the whole community.
But in their search for a better future, they will face some big obstacles along the way. In the second episode, Nigerian cook Maggie Ogunbanwo gives Sgaw, Jamie and the boys cooking lessons at her café in Penygroes. Then, it's a race against time to finish the van's renovations before the grand opening at the tasting day; and Sgaw makes a decision that will change his - and his family's - lives forever.
