Crwys was born in Craig Cefn Parc, an industrial village to the north of Swansea.
As a teenager he was a regular winner at the local eisteddfodau. This is where he learnt his craft. He further developed his skill during his time at Watcyn Wyn's school in Ammanford. Crwys followed Watcyn Wyn's guidelines by writing simply and naturally. His main themes were village life and the dignified society of the humble working class.
For many years he was a minister in Brynmawr and also worked for the Bible Society. Many have learnt his poems and recited them on numerous occasions. Even today poems such as Melin Trefin, Y Border Bach and Y Garreg Filltir can be heard in local eisteddfodau.
