T H Parry Williams was born in Rhyd-ddu. His parents were very ambitious for him to pursue an academic career. Their home became a scholarly centre with academics from all over Europe staying at Tŷ'r Ysgol to study Welsh with his father.
As a young boy he won a scholarship to attend Porthmadog School. He later spoke at length about his 'hiraeth' (homesickness) during this period.
In 1908 he graduated with first class honours in Welsh and gained a second degree in Latin in 1909 at Aberystwyth University. He then studied at Jesus College Oxford, Freiburg and the Sorbonne.
'Hon' and 'Tŷ'r Ysgol' are amongst his most famous poems.
