O Flaen Dy Lygaid: Llewod '74

With Lions' fever sweeping the nation, a special edition of O Flaen Dy Lygaid, takes a look back at the historic 1974 rugby tour.

At the time, the tour was the subject of political debate because of the apartheid in South Africa, with many opposing the trip. The strong opposition to the Lions' tour to South Africa even led to a rift between the British government and the rugby unions.

To go or not to go?

Despite being one of the best wingers in the world at the time, current Lions' Manager, Gerald Davies, decided not to go on the 1974 tour. "I considered it, but there were a number of reasons why I couldn't go on that tour - and it was partly because of apartheid. It was a moral issue between me and my conscience," explains the former winger.

Although Gerald ruled himself out, his close friend and Wales' scrum-half at the time, Gareth Edwards, was ready to board the plane.

Gareth, originally from Gwaun-cae-Gurwen, says, "What young lad wouldn't want to play rugby against the best teams in the world?

"I have to admit that playing rugby in a country with such a strong rugby tradition was the only thing on my mind at the time. Maybe I was a bit naive but that's what I was thinking."

The programme will also feature comments by Wales' former captain and coach, Clive Rowlands, who was a Lions' selector in 1974.

Archive clips of the news on and off the pitch offer a taste of this turbulent period, as well as the thrilling rugby played by the Lions.
