O'r Galon: Golwg Newydd

A opening the door on the world of the blind and tells a compelling and unique individual story.

The programme O'r Galon: Golwg Newydd (From the Heart: Looking Anew) is a fascinating portrayal of Simon Cavendish - a man born and bred in Poland who went blind when he was four years old but has succeeded in leading an independent life as a fluent Welsh speaker living in Wales.

Simon, 53, was born in north west Poland in the 1950s when the country was a communist state and that's where he lived until he discovered the Welsh language, moved to Lampeter and forged a new identity for himself.

An inspirational story

In Wales, he changed his name, won a scholarship and earned degree in Welsh. He now makes a living adapting Welsh books to Braille, one of only two people doing this work in the Welsh language. He also works as a professional masseur and instructs local authority workers about the far-reaching implications of the 1995 Disability Act. The programme, produced by P.O.P.1, follows Simon at home in Cardigan where he has lived for a year or so, and at work in Lampeter, Swansea as well as Cardigan.

O'r Galon: Golwg Newydd is more than anything else a memorable portrayal of a man who has succeeded in living a full, independent life despite his tough, impoverished upbringing in Poland.

"I was glad of the opportunity to express my gratitude to the people of Wales for giving me the chance to enjoy an independent life. Without the support of Welsh communities over the last 20 years, it wouldn't have been possible for me to have had a complete life, a life without violence, a spiritual, intellectual life."
