Owen Edwards

Owen Edwards

A tribute programme to Owen Edwards, a man described as 'a giant of the broadcasting world', and the first Director of S4C. It will be followed by one of Owen Edwards' own programmes from the early 1980s filmed in Patagonia, Plant y Paith: Pobl Cwmhyfryd.

The tribute follows the life story of the man who was born and brought up in Aberystwyth, son of Sir Ifan ab Owen Edwards, founder of Urdd Gobaith Cymru, and grandson of the historian, author and publisher, O.M.Edwards.M

Among those contributing to the programme are school friend John Meredith, producer Wil Aaron and Glyn Tegai Hughes and Alwyn Roberts, two of the original members of the S4C Authority.

Broadcasting historian Jamie Medhurst will evaluate Owen Edwards' contribution as the pioneering leader of S4C from 1981-1989, while his then colleagues remember him as a firm leader and a kind individual.

Owen Edwards' career began as a presenter of Welsh-language programmes on ITV and BBC. He earned an excellent reputation as a cultured broadcaster on the BBC's daily news programme, Heddiw. In the 1970s, he went behind the cameras as Programme Organiser with the BBC, then Head of Programmes before being appointed Controller, BBC Wales in 1974.

One of those indebted to Owen Edwards for his leadership and friendship and who admired him a great deal is the well-known broadcaster, Hywel Gwynfryn.

"Owen had the ability to be incisive and sympathetic with those he was interviewing and he was a striking, good-looking man on screen," says Hywel. "As an administrator, he could engender loyalty and I always felt proud to be part of his team. I know others in the BBC and S4C felt the same. He taught me to listen as a broadcaster and not to ask too many questions. You respected his opinion because you knew he'd been through the experience himself. He was a kind and generous man."
